The Somali Women Riescue Council (SWRC) strongly condemns the arrest of Sadia Moalin Ali, who was peacefully advocating for tuktuk drivers protesting the sharp increase in fuel prices. These drivers were exercising their right to demonstrate and express legitimate concerns about the rising cost of living.
SWRC calls on the Federal Government to immediately release Sadia Moalin Ali and all tuktuk drivers who were detained during the peaceful demonstration. The unlawful arrest of individuals—especially women who are advocating for community rights—is unacceptable and a violation of fundamental freedoms.
Instead of suppressing peaceful voices, the government should engage with the drivers and work toward practical solutions to address their grievances, particularly the impact of high fuel prices on their livelihoods.
SWRC urges the authorities to respect citizens’ rights, ensure the protection of women, and promote constructive dialogue rather than intimidation or unlawful detention.
