Under the REBUILD Project, the Centre for Peace and Democracy - CPD, in partnership with ActionAid strengthened and supported the management of a safe space for women and girls in Al-Aamiin IDP settlement, Jowhar District.

The initiative aimed to improve access to protection information, GBV support services, counselling, referral pathways, and case management support for vulnerable women and girls living in displacement-affected communities.

Through a community-led approach involving Community-Based Protection Networks (CBPNs), the project reinforced an existing community-run safe space to promote local ownership, trust, and long-term sustainability.

During the reporting period, the safe space hosted an awareness session attended by 56 women participants, focusing on violence prevention, early reporting, womenโ€™s empowerment, emergency shelter-related concerns, and available GBV services and referral mechanisms.

The activity was facilitated by a dedicated protection team comprising one GBV Nurse and two GBV Case Workers, who also supported GBV screening, counselling, referrals, and follow-up case management for domestic violence-related cases.

The intervention demonstrated the importance of locally grounded protection mechanisms that combine awareness, psychosocial support, and practical service pathways in a safe and confidential environment.

After months of tension in Galkacyo, the Sacad and Lelkase communities have taken a decisive step forward by committing to peaceful coexistence.

In a one-day meeting supported by the Somalia Stability Fund (SSF) and implemented under the Joint Peace Initiative (JPI) by CPD & PSA in a CARE International Somalia led consortium, government officials, community elders, and religious leaders came together to translate dialogue into lasting impact.

Key outcomes from the engagement:
โœ… Agreement on clear deterrents to end killings and protect civilian life
โœ… A collective vision to position the Mudug region as a model of stability and peaceful coexistence
โœ… Renewed trust anchored in local leadership and traditional conflict resolution mechanisms

This is community-led peacebuilding in action. When elders, faith leaders, and citizens unite behind a common purpose, transformation is not only possible โ€“ it becomes sustainable.

In a region where a single misunderstanding over livestock or water can unravel months of stability, Centre for Peace and Democracy - CPD brought together 40 Peace Committee representatives from seven districts across South Galkayo for a two-day Exchange Learning Visit in Galkacyo South, Galmudug State, Somalia.

Participants from Bandiradley, Galdogob, Docoley, AfBarwaqo, Towfiq, Gelinsoor, and Dhabad engaged in intensive discussions on conflict resolution, community reconciliation, and dialogue facilitation using traditional Xeer systems and locally led peacebuilding approaches.

The initiative strengthened collaboration between district peace committees while creating space for participants to exchange practical mediation experiences, identify shared challenges, and develop coordinated solutions for community-led conflict prevention.

โ€œFor ten years, I thought peace meant silence just keeping men from picking up guns. Now I know peace means process,โ€ said Mariam Hassan, a Peace Committee Representative from Galdogob.

The training concluded with participants developing a joint action plan and communication mechanism aimed at improving coordination, rapid mediation response, and long-term peacebuilding collaboration across the districts.

This activity is part of the Joint Peace Initiative Project (JPI) implemented jointly by CPD and PSA under the CARE International Somalia led consortium and funded by the Somalia Stability Fund

The four-day Youth Policy Consultation Workshop through Inclusive Social Accountability (ISA) has successfully concluded in Garbaharey District, Gedo Region.

Implemented by the Centre for Peace and Democracy - CPD under the Dowlad Wanaag Consortium, led by VNG International with support from the Somalia Stability Fund (SSF), the workshop brought together 50 youth participants from formal youth groups and the Youth Caucus formed under ISA.

Youth engaged directly with the Jubaland Ministry of Youth and Sports on the Draft Youth Policy, expected to be validated in May 2026. Through the ISA approach, participants analyzed the policy, identified priorities, and contributed practical recommendations rooted in the realities of Garbaharey youth.

The workshop strengthened youth capacity in policy engagement, dialogue, and social accountability, while enabling ministry representatives to better understand the challenges and aspirations of young peopleโ€”especially around participation in local governance.

This milestone marks a step toward a more inclusive, responsive, and youth-driven policy, reinforcing collaboration between youth groups and government institutions.

In Jowhar District, a powerful shift is underway moving from reacting to disasters to anticipating them. Through a multi-stakeholder workshop led by the Centre for Peace and Democracy - CPD under the WAHAFA Build Phase project supported by Welthungerhilfe, local leaders and communities aligned around one goal: act early, save lives.

Bringing together government officials, community groups, and sector experts, the session turned Early Action Protocols (EAPs) into practical tools embedded within district plans. Clear roles, coordination pathways, and trigger-based actions were defined ensuring that warnings now lead to timely response.

The impact is real:
โ–ถ๏ธ Faster, coordinated disaster response
โ–ถ๏ธ Stronger collaboration between institutions and communities
โ–ถ๏ธ Increased local ownership of preparedness systems

Jowhar is no longer waiting for disaster to strikeโ€”it is preparing ahead, protecting lives, and setting a model for anticipatory action in Somalia.
