DRS, in partnership with FAO Somalia and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change – Hirshabelle State, officially launched the Landscape Management Plan (LMP) and established Landscape Management Committees (LMCs) under the Ugbaad Project, with the participation of the District Commissioner and relevant line ministries in Hirshabelle.

The initiative aims to strengthen environmental management, promote sustainable natural resource use, and enhance climate resilience for local communities across Hirshabelle State.

Official Opening Ceremony | Ugbaad Project – Landscape Management Planning (LMP & LMC)

Kismayo District, Jubbaland State of Somalia
Today, Deegaan Relief Services (DRS), in collaboration with government partners and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), successfully held the official Opening Ceremony of the Community Consultation Meeting under the Ugbaad Project.
The ceremony was officially opened by H.E. Minister Aidid Suleyman Hashi, Minister of Environment & Climate Change, who reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to climate resilience, sustainable land and natural resource management, and inclusive community participation.
The event brought together representatives from line ministries, district authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders, reflecting strong coordination and partnership in advancing Landscape Management Planning (LMP) and Landscape Management Committees (LMCs).
This consultation marks an important step toward strengthening integrated land-use planning, improving climate adaptation, and supporting sustainable livelihoods in Kismayo District.
DRS extends sincere appreciation to all partners and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and support.

Jowhar | Water Management Practice – Field Training

Deegaan Relief Services (DRS), in collaboration with FAO Somalia, conducted a practical field training on water management practices at Xaanshooley Canal in Jowhar District.

The session focused on hands-on demonstrations to improve canal water management, maintenance, and efficient use of irrigation water, supporting ecological flood protection, sustainable agriculture, and community resilience.

Jowhar | Field Practice on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)

Deegaan Relief Services (DRS), in collaboration with FAO Somalia, conducted field practice sessions as part of the Training on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Ecological/Natural Flood Protection in Jowhar District.

Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations on vegetation management, grass and tree planting techniques, and eco-friendly embankment protection to reduce flood risks and strengthen canal resilience. The training promotes community-led, climate-resilient solutions for sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.

Conflict Sensitivity in Practice | Jowhar

Deegaan Relief Services (DRS), in collaboration with FAO Somalia, conducted a Conflict Sensitivity Workshop for Canal Committees and Local Authorities, followed by practical field exercises at Hansholey Canal with members of the Canal Committee.

The activity focused on applying conflict-sensitive approaches to canal management, water sharing, and flood risk reduction, strengthening cooperation and peaceful coordination among stakeholders.

DRS remains committed to promoting inclusive, community-based solutions that enhance resilience and sustainable water management.

GBV Awareness Campaign | Jowhar

The DRS team conducted a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness campaign in Jowhar as part of ongoing project activities. The campaign aimed to raise community awareness on GBV prevention, protection, and reporting mechanisms, while promoting respect, dignity, and the rights of women and girls.

DRS remains committed to integrating GBV risk mitigation and safeguarding measures across its programs to ensure safe, inclusive, and resilient communities.

DRS, in collaboration with FAO Somalia, has successfully concluded a two-day training in Jowhar. The training was officially closed by H.E. Mohamed Sheikh Mohamoud, Minister of Agriculture & Irrigation of Hirshabelle, together with Jowhar District Commissioner Mohamed Osman Baarey.

Participants expressed appreciation for the training, highlighting its importance for Canals and Irrigation Committees in strengthening flood management and coordination.
