When conflict erupted in Baidoa on 17 August, grassroots women peacebuilders stepped forward to call for peace.
Led by Fatuma Ali Iman, the South West Women for Peace and Security organized a peace initiative calling for a ceasefire and the promotion of peace talks.
“We organized a peace initiative calling for a ceasefire and the promotion of peace talks, and it led many more people to raise stronger voice for peace,” said Fatuma. “We also mobilized the traditional elders, other sections of the society which has helped create pressure.”
Through the Joint UN initiative - Women, Peace and Protection (WPP) Programme funded by UNPeaceFund, Canada and Somalia Joint Fund (SJF), women peacebuilders were trained, empowered and organized into 17 grassroots networks, bringing together more than 250 women working with traditional elders, authorities and communities to prevent and resolve local conflicts.
At UNDP, we are proud to see these grassroots women peacebuilders taking the initiative and putting their skills and networks into action when their communities need them most.
This is the impact of investing in women’s leadership: local women leading local solutions for peace. Watch the below video shared from the Baidoa-based women peacebuilders.

UNDP Somalia through the UN Joint Rule of Law Programme II, in partnership with UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with funding from the European Union held a training to strengthen 91 participants’ legal expertise while promoting survivor-centred, gender-responsive approaches to justice and stronger collaboration across Somaliland’s justice institutions

The participants recorded an average 27-percentage-point improvement in legal skills assessments, strengthening their ability to support survivors of gender-based violence

The programme builds on broader efforts to strengthen access to justice across Somaliland. In 2025 Somaliland’s new Legal Aid Law helped more than 1,800 vulnerable people access free legal aid, including 547 women, while Baahi-Koob Centres in Hargeisa, Burao and Borama supported 464 survivors of gender-based violence with integrated legal, medical and psychosocial care

Wuxuu khibrad ballaaran u leeyahay horumarinta iyo dowlad-dhiska, isaga oo door muhiim ah ka soo qaatay xalinta dhibaatooyinka, dib-u-soo kabashada, iyo taageeridda dalalka ku jira marxaladaha kala-guurka.
