The role of education in national development cannot be over emphasized. There is a direct correlation between improving numeracy and literacy of children and enhancing not only lives and livelihoods but also the country’s security outlook and future prospects for stability. A recent studies show that children at school in Somalia are less likely to support armed groups than those missing out on education.

Improving access to quality education, combined with civic engagement opportunities, pulled Somali youths away from supporting violent groups. This is attributed to the youths being more optimistic about their future job prospects, as well as systemic core outcomes of a well structured education system, which imbues more confidence among youths (and children) in the use of nonviolent means to achieve change in their communities.

In light of the above, Indian Ocean Community Development Organization (INOCDO) has initiated the construction of a new primary school in Bosmuluq village in Rage Elle District. The project objective is to cater for the huge number of children in the village who are lacking basic education and are at risk of being recruited into armed groups.

The mission of INOCDO is to break the vicious cycle of poverty by imparting the values of education, good health, and sustainable living to the children of post – civil war torn Somalia. INOCDO believes that each child has the right to be healthy, educated, protected, respected and valued, and to grow up knowing how to help turn the tide of poverty. Currently, children in Somalia have very little (if any) access to education.

Lack of education represents one of the country’s biggest challenges as it tries to rebuild with a generation of youth who can barely read or write. INOCDO has conducted renovation of four classrooms and two toilets in the existing primary school in Rage Elle district which were previously in grievous disrepair. The total cost of the renovation was $6,567.8.

The humanitarian crisis in Somalia, characterized by both natural and man-made factors, is one of the most complex and longstanding emergencies in the world. Due to decades of poverty, marginalization, armed violence, insecurity, political instability, natural hazards and lack of development, the humanitarian situation remains critical in the country.

Prolonged drought conditions have been devastating for Somali communities and continue to drive displacement, while ongoing conflict impacts protection and human rights, reduce resilience and hinder access to basic services. This condition necessitates urgent water trucking to vulnerable communities.

In response to this, Indian Ocean Community Development Organization (INOCDO) has delivered 7,920 liters of clean water to 2,547 vulnerable families in villages around Rage Elle District through emergency water trucking with support from Somali Diaspora.
