For nearly 20 years, families in village in walked long distances every day to collect water. This placed a heavy burden on households and left the Mother and Child Health center without reliable access to safe water.

With support from IOM Somalia through the Rapid Support Mechanism, DRC has restored safe and clean water access in . Extended pipelines, new elevated water tank and three new water kiosks now ensure that families and the health center have reliable and safe water nearby.

“In the past, we drank running water alongside animals. Now, water is right at our doorstep. We are grateful to DRC and IOM,” said Sahra Hassan, a water management committee member.

Thanks to IOM Somalia, families can now focus on their health, livelihoods and community life without walking hours every day to collect water.

🚨 Food Crisis in Somalia: 6.5 Million People at Risk

Drought, conflict and the decline in humanitarian assistance in Somalia has resulted in an estimated 6.5 million people to face high levels of acute food insecurity, doubling since August 2025.

Even if rains improve between April and June, 5.5 million people are still expected to remain in crisis. Urgent funding is required to support families in Somalia affected by drought, food insecurity and malnutrition.

Sewing, Empowering!

At the DRC Women and Girls Safe Space (WGSS) Centre in , 30 women and girls selected from IDP camps learned tailoring skills through hands-on training led by dedicated women facilitators. The sessions helped build confidence and create pathways toward sustainable livelihoods.

“This skill is something that never runs out. If you are given money, it will eventually finish, but this will stay with you forever. Wherever I go, this is a skill I can use to earn a living,” said Laylo Hassan, tailoring participant.

Supported by Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete, the centre provided a safe, well-equipped and supportive environment where women and girls could learn and grow with confidence.

The tailoring participants were part of a wider group of 120 women and girls who engaged in skills development activities such as Henna Design, Tie and Dye and Literacy, helping expand their opportunities for income generation and self-reliance.

In Hargeisa, we convened government partners, UN agencies, NGOs and donors to strengthen protection for people on the move along the Eastern Migration Route. Bringing together diverse stakeholders, the discussion combined data, operational insights and lived experiences.

DRC presented evidence on mixed migration trends along the route, while partners and panelists highlighted smuggling dynamics, protection risks and critical response gaps.

The message was clear: this route is becoming increasingly dangerous, with many people no longer just passing through but instead becoming stranded with limited options.

“We have identified the risks and we have responses in place, but I think this is far too little compared to the needs. We are speaking about many young people, among them children and women. People on the move make really difficult choices and they are in very desperate situations. Many of these choices lead to hardship and suffering,” said Filip Lozinski, DRC Somalia Country Director.

Participants identified key priorities, including strengthening protection services, improving access to reliable information and advancing coordinated, route-based responses.

Thanks to Danida for making this event possible.

The severe drought in village, , left families and health facilities struggling with critical water shortages. For the villagers, accessing water meant walking for hours each day. Health facilities, including the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) centers and the Community Main Hospital in the village were also affected, limiting the delivery of essential health services.

With funding from IOM Somalia through the Rapid Support Mechanism, DRC has restored and stabilized water access by rehabilitating water systems, installing solar-powered pumping, constructing water tanks, kiosks and extending pipelines to households and health facilities.

Thanks to IOM Somalia for supporting drought-affected communities in .
