The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) continues to strengthen community awareness of El Niño and its potential humanitarian impacts while providing essential support to displaced families living in camps across Somalia.
As communities face the risks associated with heavy rainfall, flooding, displacement and other climate-related challenges.

Through community engagement and humanitarian interventions, SHO continues to focus on several critical areas:
📢 El Niño Awareness and Sensitization
Engaging communities to increase understanding of El Niño-related risks, promote preparedness and encourage practical measures that can help reduce the impact of flooding and other climate-related hazards.
🏥 Health Education and Awareness
Sharing essential health information with displaced families, promoting hygiene and disease prevention, and encouraging practices that protect the health and well-being of vulnerable communities.
💚 Psychosocial Support
Engaging affected individuals and families, listening to their concerns, providing psychosocial support and helping communities cope with the emotional challenges associated with displacement and crisis.
🏕️ Emergency Shelter Support
Providing construction materials to help displaced families establish temporary shelters and improve their protection from harsh weather and unsafe living conditions.
🍚 Emergency Food Assistance
Supporting vulnerable households with essential food supplies to help address immediate needs and reduce the burden on families struggling to meet their daily requirements.
💧 Access to Clean and Safe Water
Supporting access to safe water and promoting hygiene awareness to reduce health risks, particularly in displacement camps where water, sanitation and hygiene services may be inadequate.
🤝 The Need Remains Urgent
Despite ongoing humanitarian efforts, the needs of displaced communities continue to exceed the resources available to respond adequately. Many families still require safer shelters, food, healthcare, clean water, protection and sustained humanitarian assistance.
Awareness must go hand in hand with action. Preparedness must be accompanied by support. And humanitarian response must reach the people who need it most.
SHO calls upon donors, international NGOs, humanitarian organizations, government institutions, development partners and individuals to strengthen their support for El Niño preparedness and emergency assistance to displaced communities in Somalia.

Today, the Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) Uganda Branch joins millions of Ugandans in celebrating Uganda’s Independence Day.

As we celebrate freedom, unity and national pride, we also recognize Uganda as a welcoming home to thousands of Somalis who have built lives, families, businesses and communities across the country.

For us at SHO, Uganda represents more than a place of residence ,it is a place where communities from different backgrounds continue to live, work, learn and contribute to a shared future.

On this special day, we celebrate the strength of unity in diversity, solidarity and peaceful coexistence between Ugandan and Somali communities.

From the SHO Uganda Branch, we extend our warmest wishes to all Ugandans and everyone who calls Uganda home.

The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) continues to stand with communities affected by conflict, displacement, drought, floods and other humanitarian crises across Somalia.
Through our ongoing humanitarian interventions, SHO continues to support displaced families through:
🏕️ Construction of temporary shelters to provide safer and more dignified living conditions in displacement camps.
💧 Provision of safe and clean water to reduce exposure to waterborne diseases and ease the burden on families who often travel long distances in search of water.
🍚 Food assistance to help vulnerable families meet their immediate nutritional needs.
💊 Essential medicines and healthcare support for communities with limited access to health services.
📢 Awareness and sensitization on health, hygiene, protection and other issues affecting displaced communities.
🤝 Community engagement and psychosocial support, ensuring that affected people are listened to and that humanitarian interventions respond to the realities they face.
However, the need continues to grow.
The increasing number of people being displaced is placing enormous pressure on already limited resources and humanitarian services. Many families continue to live in difficult conditions, with inadequate shelter and limited access to food, clean water, healthcare, sanitation and protection.
For SHO, humanitarian response is not simply about providing assistance ,it is about protecting dignity, reducing vulnerability and helping communities regain hope and resilience.
But we cannot do this alone.
We call upon donors, humanitarian organizations, international NGOs, development partners, governments, foundations and individuals to strengthen support for displaced communities in Somalia.
The crisis is deepening. The needs are growing. The response must grow with them.
Together, we can provide more families with safe shelter, clean water, food, healthcare and the dignity they deserve.

Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) participated in an important meeting held at the Lower Shabelle Regional Governor’s Office, led by the Deputy Governor for Social and Humanitarian Affairs.
The meeting brought together stakeholders to discuss pressing regional issues, with particular attention to the situation and urgent needs of displaced persons across the region.
Following the discussions, SHO joined a field visit to sites where displaced families are currently living. What we witnessed highlighted the difficult and often dire conditions facing many displaced people, including challenges related to basic living conditions and access to essential support.
For SHO, humanitarian action must go beyond meetings and discussions. It requires listening to affected communities, seeing their realities firsthand, and working together to translate identified needs into timely action.
We remain committed to working with the Lower Shabelle regional authorities, humanitarian partners, local communities and other stakeholders to strengthen the response and help ensure that displaced families receive the assistance, protection and dignity they deserve.
The needs are urgent, and the response must be coordinated, practical and timely.
Together, we can move from assessment to action and from vulnerability to resilience.

Today, the Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) joined fellow members of the Somali Humanitarian Consortium (SHC) in conducting an El Niño Impact, Needs, Vulnerability and Preparedness Assessment across communities in Somalia, including IDP camps.
The initiative brought humanitarian organizations closer to communities to listen directly to their experiences, understand their concerns and identify the risks and needs that may arise from El Niño-related hazards.
Particular attention was given to displaced and vulnerable populations, who may face heightened exposure to flooding and other climate-related risks.
Through this assessment and community awareness engagement, SHO contributed to efforts to:
🔹 Understand community-level impacts, needs and vulnerabilities
🔹 Raise awareness about potential El Niño-related risks
🔹 Strengthen community preparedness and early action
🔹 Listen to communities and identify practical preparedness measures
🔹 Pay particular attention to the needs of IDPs and other vulnerable groups
🔹 Strengthen locally led humanitarian coordination and response
For SHO, preparedness begins with listening to communities.
Those living in areas most exposed to climate and humanitarian risks understand their challenges, vulnerabilities and priorities. Their voices must therefore be at the center of preparedness planning and humanitarian action.
As Somalia continues to face complex humanitarian and climate-related challenges, SHO remains committed to community engagement, early action and locally led solutions that help reduce risks and strengthen resilience.

In Afmadow, Juba Region, a natural drainage channel that historically carried rainwater away from the town has become heavily blocked after waste was dumped into the drainage route. This obstruction is preventing water from flowing freely and could increase the risk of flooding when heavy rains occur.
Recognizing the potential danger, the local administration has taken the initiative to clear and reopen the drainage channel. The administration has volunteered to take responsibility for the work and is currently using an excavator to remove the accumulated waste and restore the waterway.
However, fuel costs for operating the excavator remain a critical challenge.

The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) is appealing to:

to come forward and support the fuel costs required to complete this important flood-prevention initiative.
A relatively small contribution toward fuel can help enable the continued clearing of the drainage route, allowing rainwater to flow more freely and helping the town prepare for potential heavy rainfall.
Flood preparedness is everyone's responsibility.
Supporting locally led preparedness efforts before flooding occurs can help communities reduce risks, protect homes and infrastructure, and strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies.
SHO recognizes the commitment of the Afmadow local administration in taking the initiative and volunteering to lead this work. We now call upon partners and well-wishers to stand with them and help ensure that the work is completed.

Across Somalia, the consequences of conflict are being felt every day by families forced to leave their homes and seek safety in displacement camps.

The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) has been visiting displaced communities across the country, sitting with affected families, listening to their stories and trying to understand the realities behind the numbers.

But these visits raise an important question:

Do we truly understand who bears the greatest burden of conflict?

What happens to a woman when she is forced to flee her home with her children?

What does a child experience when conflict takes away their home, education, security and sense of normality?

What happens to families who arrive in displacement camps with little more than the belongings they managed to carry?

Through our engagement with displaced communities, SHO has identified women and children among the groups most vulnerable to the consequences of conflict and displacement.

Their experiences can include loss of homes and livelihoods, separation from family, lack of food and safe water, inadequate shelter and limited access to healthcare and education. Women and girls may also face heightened protection risks, including gender-based violence and exploitation.

For SHO, these realities have shaped our approach.

Our interventions place women and children at the center.

We work to support their access to:

The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) participated in the BRA Durable Solutions Technical Working Group meeting held on 29 September 2026 at Palm Hotel, AAIA, Mogadishu.

Representing SHO, Mr. Hasan Ahmed, Program Officer, joined government representatives, humanitarian actors, district leadership, community representatives and development partners to discuss progress, priorities and practical pathways toward durable solutions for displaced and vulnerable communities.

The meeting included discussions on the Eviction Task Force update, durable solutions, Housing, Land and Property (HLP), service mapping along the Mogadishu - Afgooye corridor, district-level priorities, inclusion of marginalized and minority communities, and strengthened coordination among key stakeholders.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of communities in Dayniile, Kaxda, Garasbaaley and Gubadley through inclusive, community-centered and sustainable approaches.

SHO remains committed to supporting coordinated humanitarian action, protection, inclusion, dignity and durable solutions for displaced and host communities across Somalia.

Meaningful progress requires strong partnerships, community participation and locally led humanitarian leadership.

Together, we can move from short-term responses toward lasting solutions.

The Somali Humanitarian Organization (SHO) recently visited displaced communities and camps across somalia to engage directly with families affected by conflict and displacement.
During our visit, we sat with affected people, listened to their experiences, and witnessed the difficult realities they continue to face after being forced from their homes.
Their stories revealed the human cost of conflict and the hardships that displacement brings.
Families spoke about challenges including:
🍚 Lack of adequate food and nutrition
🏠 Inadequate and unsafe shelter
🏥 Limited access to healthcare and essential medicines
💧 Lack of safe and clean water
🧼 Insufficient sanitation and hygiene services
🛡️ Protection concerns, including gender-based violence
👩‍👧 Particular challenges faced by women, children and other vulnerable people
For many families, displacement has meant losing not only their homes, but also their livelihoods, security, access to essential services and sense of stability.
During our engagement, affected communities made a clear appeal: they need humanitarian actors to stand with them.
They are asking for more than words. They are asking for food, safe shelter, healthcare, clean water, protection, dignity and opportunities to rebuild their lives.
At SHO, we believe that humanitarian response must begin by listening to the people affected. Their experiences should inform the solutions designed to support them.
Their voices must not be forgotten after the visit ends.
