The drought affecting Somalia continues to intensify, severely impacting the lives of people and their livestock. The expected seasonal rains have either been insufficient or have completely failed, leaving the land dry and water sources such as wells and reservoirs depleted. Many pastoral communities have lost the livestock they depend on for their livelihoods, while numerous families are struggling with hunger and thirst.

Children are increasingly facing malnutrition, and many mothers and elderly people are living under extremely difficult conditions. In several regions, families are being forced to leave their homes in search of water and food, leading to growing displacement and worsening the humanitarian situation across the country.

This critical situation calls for urgent humanitarian assistance and genuine solidarity. It is a shared responsibility for Somali critical situation calls for urgent humanitarian assistance and genuine solidarity. It is a shared responsibility for Somali communities, businesses, humanitarian organizations, and the government to come together and strengthen their efforts to support those affected by the drought. Today, compassion and unity must be translated into real action to help alleviate the suffering of vulnerable communities across our nation. 🤲

This video of the young boy reflects the harsh reality that many Somali families are facing. In his eyes, you can see thirst, hardship, and a small spark of hope that still remains in his heart. It is an image that speaks about the severe drought affecting our country, impacting both people and livestock.

This young boy is not only a child in distress, but a symbol of a Somali generation confronting difficult conditions—water shortages, food scarcity, and a very tough life. The drought is a heavy trial, but it is also a reminder of the need for unity, compassion, and humanitarian support.

We pray to Allah (SWT) to lift this drought from us, bless us with beneficial rain, and grant our people and livestock a life of relief and prosperity. 🤲🌧️

Humanitarian Statement on the Drought Crisis in Somalia
Somalia is currently facing one of the most severe drought crises in its recent history, posing a grave threat to human life, livelihoods, and dignity. This is not merely an environmental challenge—it is a large-scale humanitarian emergency affecting millions of vulnerable people across the country.
The prolonged lack of rainfall has led to acute water shortages, widespread food insecurity, loss of livestock, and increasing displacement. Children, women, older persons, and people with disabilities are bearing the heaviest burden of this crisis, facing heightened risks of malnutrition, disease, and protection concerns.
Evidence from affected communities indicates that the current drought is more severe than the 2011 famine and the Dabadheer drought of the 1980s. Despite the scale and urgency of the situation, the crisis has not yet received adequate attention or response, leaving many families without access to basic life-saving assistance.
From a humanitarian perspective, this crisis demands immediate, collective action. It is not a political issue, but a matter of saving lives, protecting human dignity, and upholding our shared responsibility toward vulnerable populations.
We call upon government authorities, humanitarian partners, donors, and communities—both within Somalia and in the diaspora—to urgently mobilize resources, strengthen coordinated responses, and support affected populations through emergency assistance, resilience building, and sustained humanitarian engagement.
Failure to act decisively will result in further loss of life and deepening human suffering. Timely intervention can still prevent the worst outcomes and restore hope to communities on the brink of catastrophe.

Drought and Water Scarcity Crisis in Somalia
The prolonged drought and widespread water scarcity affecting multiple regions of Somalia have escalated into a severe humanitarian emergency. This crisis continues to threaten the lives of vulnerable populations and the survival of livestock, which remains the backbone of local livelihoods. Communities are experiencing critical shortages of safe drinking water, food, and essential services, significantly increasing the risks of malnutrition, displacement, and loss of life.
As a humanitarian non-governmental organization, we express deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation, particularly in the eastern regions of Somalia, including Sool, Sanaag, and surrounding areas. Recurrent drought, limited access to sustainable water sources, and weakened livelihood systems have sharply increased humanitarian needs and eroded community resilience.
The Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia holds the primary responsibility for safeguarding the welfare and protection of its citizens. Urgent, coordinated, and effective action by national authorities—working closely with humanitarian partners—is essential to prevent further human suffering and economic losses.
Immediate life-saving interventions are critically needed, including emergency water supply, food assistance, nutrition support, and livelihood recovery programs. Any delay in response risks worsening the crisis and deepening the vulnerability of already-affected communities.
We therefore call upon the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia, humanitarian agencies, donors, and development partners to urgently mobilize resources and scale up coordinated emergency responses to address the needs of affected populations.
The magnitude of the drought and water scarcity crisis requires decisive and immediate action to save lives and protect livelihoods.
