Somalia Ends the C6+: A New Chapter in Foreign Relations.
After more than a decade of influence, Somalia has officially ended the role of the C6+—a powerful group of international partners that once helped guide the country’s political, security, and economic recovery.
On June 12, 2025, the Somali government announced that it was disbanding the C6+, calling the group “outdated and obsolete.” The decision marks a major shift in how Somalia handles foreign aid and diplomacy, signaling a move away from multilateral coordination and toward direct, bilateral partnerships.
What Was the C6+?
The C6+ was never a formal alliance. Instead, it was an informal coordination group made up of six core international actors—the UN, EU, US, UK, IGAD, and the AU—plus others like Ethiopia, Kenya, the Arab League, and Sweden. Since around 2010, the C6+ had acted as a steering group for Somalia’s recovery after decades of civil war and state collapse.
