Saturday is the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.

Women and girls of African descent continue to face multiple forms of barriers and discriminations.

Despite these challenges, they continue to rise—leading movements, excelling in academics and careers, advocating for justice, and breaking generational cycles of poverty and exclusion.

Greater efforts are needed to support and empower them.

STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION

We strongly condemn the ongoing harassment, violence, and mistreatment against Somali people living in South Africa, particularly Somali business owners and families who are legally residing and working in the country.

The Somali community in South Africa are taxpayers who contribute significantly to the economy through trade, job creation, and community development. Therefore, it is unacceptable for their human rights to be violated, their safety threatened, or for them to be targeted because of their nationality or businesses.

We call upon the Government of South Africa to urgently intervene and:

Ensure the safety and protection of Somali citizens and businesses.

Conduct thorough investigations into attacks and abuses against Somali communities.

Bring those responsible for these acts to justice.

Guarantee equal protection and respect for the rights of all people living in the country.
We also urge human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the international community to closely monitor the situation and support efforts to protect Somali communities affected by these challenges.
Finally, we emphasize that coexistence, human dignity, and the rule of law are essential foundations for peace and stability in every society.
