We’re grateful for UK in Somalia support in Somalia, which will help us take lifesaving action ahead of anticipated El Niño flooding. The funding will enable Caafimaad Plus teams on the ground to help families move to safety and deliver critical health, nutrition, water and sanitation services to those impacted. Acting early will help save lives, protect livelihoods and reduce the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities.

As Somalia 🇸🇴 prepares for anticipated El Niño-related flooding, the UK 🇬🇧 has announced humanitarian support to help vulnerable communities prepare and respond.

This will help up to 600,000 people access essential health, nutrition, water, sanitation and protection services, while strengthening early warning systems and helping families move to safety.

By acting early, we can help communities withstand future climate shocks and build long-term resilience.

Community health workers are the vital link connecting remote families to life-saving care.

In rural southern , a simple home visit changed everything for Amino and her one-year-old son, Mohamed. A community health worker quickly spotted severe acute malnutrition and guided them straight to Wirkoy, a health center deeply embedded in the community.

Run by the Juba Foundation under the Caafimaad Plus Consortium with EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid support, the clinic provided Mohamed with therapeutic food and medical care. Today, Mohamed has his bright energy back, and Amino is sharing these lessons with her neighbors.

Localization is often described as a destination. For Humanitarian Access Initiative (HAI) community facilitators in southern Somalia, it looks more like a weekly practice.

Facilitators spend their days under shade trees, listening rather than arriving with forms and questions. Their role is to help communities tell their own stories of resilience, not to extract information from them.

In one community, residents raised funds from diaspora members and local businesses, drilled a borehole and built a water tank themselves. An aid agency contributed storage bladders where it could, without taking over. When we focus on local strengths, resilience follows.

This is the approach the Humanitarian Access Initiative takes to improve community engagement and partnership for locally led humanitarian action, led by the Caafimaad Plus Consortium and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), with funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid and the UK in Somalia.

𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐨𝐥: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫

When a mother and her children are hit hard by drought, they need a place to lean on. A place that restores hope, and offers a shoulder to carry them through.

A mother walks for hours under the sun, carrying a child too weak to cry. She has watched her child grow thinner by the day, and fear has become part of every step of that journey. For many families in Wajid District, the walk ends at the Waaberi Stabilization Center.

Months of drought and ongoing conflict have pushed families into crisis. Pastoralist communities have been hit especially hard, and malnutrition rates have surged.

Mothers arrive here carrying children who are severely malnourished and fighting for their lives. They receive urgent medical care and nutrition support. The results speak for themselves: 98% of children treated at the center recover.

Children who arrive weak leave stronger, healthier, and full of hope.

The center is managed by Action Against Hunger USA in Somalia under the Caafimaad Plus Consortium, with funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid.

This work is only possible because of strong partnership and sustained support. As malnutrition levels remain high across Bakool, continued investment from donors and communities alike is what keeps this lifeline open. Because for these children, this is survival.

These are the people behind every number we report.

This World Humanitarian Day, under the theme , we celebrate the health workers and volunteers serving Somalia's communities every day. Through them, Caafimaad Plus Consortium has reached over 3 million children and families in 2025, often in the hardest circumstances imaginable, supported by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid and UK in Somalia.

They are not distant figures. They are our colleagues and neighbors, turning duty into action.

Yesterday was Day 1 of World Breastfeeding Week.

Caafimaad Plus Consortium joined the Ministry of Health- Somalia and other partners at the official launch in Mogadishu.

We stood for turning breastfeeding-friendly policies into everyday practice, in workplaces, in health facilities, in communities.

Because the first 1,000 days shape a child's future. And no mother should have to choose between going back to work and feeding her baby.

A missed vaccine is rarely one failure.

It's a family who couldn't reach a clinic before the rains cut off the road. A health worker who found a child a week too late. A dose that existed, but never arrived.

In South Central Somalia, closing that distance is not something any single actor can do alone, and that's the point.

Caafimaad Plus brings together health facilities and community outreach as one continuous system, not two separate efforts.

In clinics, children receive vaccines on schedule, delivered by trained staff with proper oversight. But for families displaced by conflict or drought, or living hours from the nearest facility, that clinic might as well not exist.

So the system meets them where they are.

Health workers go door to door, tracking who's missed a dose and who's never had one, catching gaps before they become emergencies, and referring children onward for treatment when a vaccine alone isn't enough.

This works because of who's at the table.

Juba Foundation's teams move fluidly between facility and community, the same staff who support clinical delivery are the ones walking the last mile to reach a family that couldn't otherwise be reached.

That's not a logistics detail. It's the difference between a programme that exists on paper and one that actually arrives at a door.

None of this happens without sustained investment.

This work is made possible with the support of the EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid that doesn't just pay for vaccines, but for the systems and partnerships that get them to the children who need them most.

Partnership, in immunisation, isn't a value statement. It's the operating model.

It's the only way coverage holds when the road floods, when a family moves twice in a season, when a single clinic can't be everywhere at once.

Where partners share the work, children don't fall through the space between systems.

In June alone, our dedicated teams screened and treated 𝟑,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 across 𝟏𝟓 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, located 10 to 30 kilometres from , 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 directly to the 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 of pastoral and farming communities.
