SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland recently conducted a two day multi-sectoral training on Case Management, Care Reform, Gatekeeping, and Referral Pathways for children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing parental care.

The training brought together representatives from Hargeisa Local Government, courts, police, schools, and Community Child Protection Committees (CCPCs) to strengthen coordinated, child-centred responses for vulnerable children.

The sessions focused on key areas including the principles of alternative care, care reform, gatekeeping mechanisms to prevent unnecessary family separation, case management processes, best interests determination, and referral pathways to ensure timely and appropriate support for children.

Through interactive group work and practical case scenarios, participants applied their learning to real-life situations commonly encountered in Somaliland. The training also strengthened understanding of the complementary roles of local government, courts, police, schools, community structures, and service providers in protecting children and supporting families.

At the conclusion of the training, participants developed institutional action plans outlining concrete steps to improve coordination, operationalize referral pathways, strengthen gatekeeping practices, raise community awareness on child protection and care reform, and improve case management.

Access to safe and reliable water is changing daily life in Dur Dur IDP Camp, Burao, Somaliland.

In Dur Dur camp, many families have been forced to leave their homes due to prolonged drought. For children, caregivers, and families living through displacement, access to water is not only about survival, it is also about health, dignity, livelihoods, and the possibility of rebuilding daily life.

Through our TV-GALA Project, and with the support of SOS Children’s Villages Denmark (SOS Børnebyerne), SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland has worked alongside Burao local authorities, the Ministry of Water Development (Wasaaradda Biyaha JSL) , Burao Water Agency, landowners, technical experts, contractors, community volunteers, and partners to help establish a stable water supply for families in Dur Dur camp.

This water solution supports families with access to safe and clean water for domestic use, farming, livestock care, and crop production, helping strengthen resilience in the face of ongoing climate-related challenges.

Supporting farming households from planting to harvest in Abeesalay Village 🌱

Through our Humanitarian Action SOMJR Project, funded by the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA), SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland supported 100 vulnerable farming households in Abeesalay Village, Burao District, Togdheer Region with agricultural equipment, quality seeds, and tractor ploughing services.

The support began in March 2026 with the distribution of seeds and farming tools, followed by tractor-hour ploughing support from March to April 2026. In May 2026, 50 farming households also received Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training to strengthen their knowledge and improve crop production.

The agricultural tools provided included wheelbarrows, shovels, hoes, rakes, backpack sprayers, protective coats, protective hats, and face masks. Farmers also received quality seeds, including sorghum, maize, cowpeas, watermelon, tomato, hot pepper, and onion.

The GAP training covered key topics such as land preparation, timely planting, seed selection, proper crop spacing, soil fertility management, integrated pest and disease management, safe handling of agricultural inputs, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

With harvesting taking place from June to July 2026, this support is helping vulnerable farming households restore their livelihoods, improve crop production, and strengthen household food security.

The activity was conducted with the presence of Mr. Muhyadin Abdi Yuusuf, Togdheer Regional Coordinator from the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MOAD) Wasaaradda Horumarinta Beeraha Somaliland

Yesterday, July 5th, 2026 in Borama, SOS Children’s Villages Somaliland, through the Family and Community Empowerment Program, held a Grant Handover for 100 households/ beneficiaries from Haddi IDP Site.

A grant of $50,000 USD was handed over to SAW CBO (Community Based Organization) to support Income-Generating Activities (IGA).

This support aims to help families strengthen their livelihoods, build resilience, and move toward greater self-reliance.

The event brought together the Governor of Awdal ( Xafiiska Gudoomiyaha Gobolka Awdal ), representatives from local government, line ministries, community leadership, CBOs, and SOS Children’s Villages Somaliland.

This initiative reflects our continued commitment to strengthening families, empowering communities, and creating opportunities that help children and young people grow up in more stable and supportive environments.

We sincerely thank the local government, community representatives, SAW CBO, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful completion of today’s handover.

Today in Gabiley, SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, through the Family and Community Empowerment Program, held a Grant Handover for beneficiaries from the New Gabiley Community.

A grant of $25,000 USD was handed over to Hanaan Ogaal Organization to support Income-Generating Activities (IGA) for 50 households in Gabiley. This support aims to help families strengthen their livelihoods, build resilience, and move toward greater self-reliance.

The event brought together representatives from local government, line ministries, community leadership, CBOs, and SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland.

This initiative reflects our continued commitment to strengthening families, empowering communities, and creating opportunities that help children and young people grow up in more stable and supportive environments.

Supporting Drought-Affected Families in Awdal Region:

SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, through our Family Strengthening Program in Awdal’s Humanitarian Action project, has continued supporting families affected by prolonged drought, conflict, loss of livelihoods, and difficult living conditions across Awdal region.

Between March and June 2026, unconditional cash assistance was provided through mobile money to 350 drought-affected households in Zaylac and Lughaya, including families in Ceelgaal, Asho’ado, Hadayta, and Idocayds villages. This support helped families meet urgent basic needs and stabilize their living conditions during a challenging period.

Food assistance was also implemented from February to May 2026, including continued food support to 50 households in Boodhka for a second consecutive month in response to the drought appeal issued by the Somaliland Government.

In addition, from 11 to 15 March 2026, essential Non-Food Items were distributed to 250 households in Borama and Baki districts. This included 150 families from Cunaqabad and Asho Ado in Borama, and 100 families in Boodhka and Seemal, who received basic household supplies to help them cope with the impact of prolonged drought and loss of livelihoods.

The distribution was conducted in coordination with local authorities, with the presence of Mr. Mostafa Muse Hami, Regional Coordinator of the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs (Wasaradda Dib-u-dajinta &Arrimaha Bani'aadannimada JSL), reflecting the importance of collaboration in supporting communities affected by drought.

On 22 June 2026, SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, under our SOMJR Project, implemented with funding from the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA), conducted the fourth and final cycle of unconditional food assistance distribution at Barwaaqo IDP Camp in Burao District.

The distribution supported 150 vulnerable internally displaced households with emergency life-saving food assistance to help meet their immediate food needs.

Many families in Barwaaqo IDP Camp continue to face food insecurity, high food prices, and limited income opportunities. This support helped improve household food consumption, reduce pressure on family resources, and contribute to the wellbeing of vulnerable children, caregivers, and families.

Although this marks the final cycle of food assistance under the SOMJR 2026 Project, humanitarian needs remain. Continued support is essential to help displaced families strengthen their resilience and improve their living conditions.

Earlier this week, SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, through the Family Strengthening Program in Hargeisa, distributed emergency support items to 37 vulnerable families recently settled in Magaalo Qasaali IDP settlement, near the 200 Road.

The families, who were previously residing in Nasahablood-A's temporary IDP camp, are now rebuilding their lives in a new settlement area. While this transition offers families a new place to settle, many continue to face urgent needs, especially around shelter, bedding, clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The support package included plastic sheets, sleeping mattresses, blankets, and mats to help families improve their temporary shelters and meet immediate household needs.

During the distribution, SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, encouraged mothers and caregivers and recognized their daily efforts to protect and care for their children under difficult conditions.

From Hargeisa to Borama and Berbera, we were happy to welcome colleagues from SOS Children’s Villages Denmark to Somaliland.

Their visit focused on seeing the projects supported through our partnership, while also learning more about the wider work of SOS Children’s Villages Somaliland with children, young people, families, and communities.

The visit started in Hargeisa, where the team met with the community in Idan IDP Camp and saw the impact of our Family Strengthening Programme’s Nexus approach. They visited supported small businesses, met with CBO members, spent time with Family-Like Care families, held discussions with young people in Supported Independent Living, and visited Cosob Farm under our Green Project.

In Borama, Awdal, they met with communities, CBOs, local authorities, community committees, and agricultural cooperatives. The team visited Hayayaabe and Xaasley communities, met the Awdal Governor, engaged with Sitee-Wabar CBO members, and travelled to Asha-Ado village to see ongoing humanitarian interventions and the Nexus approach in action.

In Berbera, Sahil, the team visited the Digital Hubs and spoke with youth participants about how the hubs are supporting learning, digital skills, and opportunities for young people. They also met with the local authority now managing the hubs, showing the importance of local ownership and sustainability.

The Berbera visit also included a meeting with CBO members, a home visit to a family supported through FSP Sahil, and discussions with the Berbera local government, particularly the Director of Social Affairs. Sitting with a family in their home gave the team the opportunity to hear firsthand how family strengthening support is empowering families and communities in Berbera.

We are especially grateful as this was the second visit from SOS Children’s Villages Denmark colleagues this May, following an earlier visit from the Denmark team. This continued engagement is a strong reflection of our partnership, collaboration, and shared commitment to children, young people, families, and communities in Somaliland.
