💙 Invest in Their Future: Supporting Young People to Build Independent Lives

Every young person deserves the opportunity to build a future filled with hope, independence and possibility.

At the end of last month, the Somaliland Care Leavers Organisation (SOCLO) brought together 60 participants in Hargeisa for its Fundraising and Networking Event, with support from SOS Children's Villages Somaliland through our Leave No Youth Behind (LNYB) Project.

The gathering created a space for meaningful conversations, new connections and opportunities to support young people transitioning from alternative care into independent adulthood.

From education and mentorship to skills development and future employment opportunities, the discussions highlighted what we can achieve when communities, institutions and young people work together.

💙 We are proud to support SOCLO as young care leavers strengthen their voices, build partnerships and take the lead in shaping their own futures.

Because leaving care should never mean being left behind.

Three girls. Three dreams. One powerful message: Education opens doors. 💙

This International Day of the Girl, we're celebrating the voices, hopes and ambitions of three remarkable girls in Somaliland.

📚 Dahabo, 8, believes education helps girls progress and dreams of completing her studies.

🎓 Hana, 13, hopes to reach university, become independent and build a better future for her family.

🩺 Asma, 13, dreams of becoming a doctor and supporting her loved ones.

Though their dreams are different, their message is shared: girls deserve the opportunity to stay in school, make choices about their futures and pursue their ambitions without the pressure of early marriage.

At SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, we believe every girl's voice matters, every dream deserves encouragement, and every girl deserves the chance to thrive.

Today, let's listen to girls. Believe in their dreams. And stand beside them as they shape their own futures. 💙

Strengthening collaboration for children and young people in Hargeisa 💙⚽

Today, SOS Children's Villages Somaliland welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Hargeisa Eng. Adan Jama Xaddi (Mideeye), to our SOS Village in Hargeisa for a visit focused on something we all share responsibility for: creating better opportunities and stronger protection for children and young people.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss how SOS Children’s Villages and Hargeisa Local Government (Dawladda Hoose ee Caasimadda Hargeisa) can continue working together to support children and young people who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it.

We also expressed our sincere appreciation to Hargeisa Local Government for its continued support, including the provision of free birth certificates and National IDs for children who have lost parental care. Having legal identity is an important part of protecting children’s rights and helping them access essential services and opportunities.

The day ended on a joyful note with the Deputy Mayor officially inaugurating our new SOS football ground. ⚽ The space will give children and young people more opportunities to play, connect, build teamwork, stay active and enjoy positive recreational activities.

Empowering families through livelihood support 💙

SOS Children's Villages Somaliland, through its Family Strengthening Programme in Hargeisa, handed over USD 15,000 in income-generation support to 50 Community for Family Empowerment (CFE) households in Hoodaale CBO, Daami-A community.

The initiative aims to strengthen household livelihoods and economic resilience by supporting families with opportunities to improve their income and build greater stability for their children and families.

The activity was carried out in collaboration with the Wasaradda Dib-u-dajinta &Arrimaha Bani'aadannimada JSL (Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs) and Gacan-Libaax District Local Government, reflecting the importance of coordinated efforts between communities, government institutions, and partners in strengthening family and community development.

At SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland, our Family Strengthening Programme continues to work alongside families and communities to strengthen their capacity, resilience, and pathways toward sustainable self-reliance.

Stronger livelihoods contribute to stronger families and stronger families create better opportunities for children.

Building stronger connections through sport!

SOS Children’s Villages in Somaliland organized a friendly football match between young people from Alla Amin and Barwaqo IDP communities in Burco, creating an opportunity for young people to come together in a safe, positive, and supportive environment.

Beyond the competition, the activity promoted psychosocial wellbeing, teamwork, friendship, confidence, and positive social interaction.

Sport can be a powerful way to bring young people together. Through shared experiences like this, participants can build new relationships, strengthen social connections, develop teamwork skills, and enjoy moments of recreation and belonging.

The match concluded with medals and awards celebrating participation, teamwork, and achievement, but the real success was the connection created between young people from both communities.

Together through sport, we build stronger connections and more supportive communities.

Strengthening Community-Based Child Protection Mechanisms:

SOS Children's Villages Somaliland conducted a two-day training in Togdheer Region to strengthen the capacity of key community stakeholders to prevent, identify, and respond to child protection concerns.

The training brought together representatives from the police, traditional and religious leadership, civil society, and local authorities, recognizing that protecting children requires coordinated action across the entire community.

Participants explored key areas including child protection risks, community-based prevention and response mechanisms, safeguarding, safe identification and referral of cases, and the importance of working together to ensure children receive timely and appropriate support.

By strengthening the knowledge, coordination, and capacity of community stakeholders, we are helping build more responsive and sustainable child protection systems that place children’s safety, rights, dignity, and wellbeing at the centre.

Together, we can create safer communities where every child is protected, supported, and able to thrive. 💙
