International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2026

Today, we celebrate the power of sport under the theme:
“Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers.”

In Somalia, sport is more than a game — it is a pathway to peace, unity, and opportunity.

Through our work GECPD Somalia, young people from diverse backgrounds are coming together on the field, breaking down social barriers, building trust, and fostering lasting connections. Every match played is a step toward stronger, more inclusive communities.

Under the BRIDGES Project in partnership with CEFA - Kenya & Somalia and co-funded by the European Union in Somalia, we are using sport as a tool to:
🤝 Promote social cohesion
🕊️ Strengthen peacebuilding efforts
🌱 Empower youth and marginalized groups
🌍 Encourage inclusion across communities

From grassroots football activities to community engagement initiatives, we are witnessing how sport can transform lives and unite communities across Somalia.

✨ Together, we are building a future where differences are celebrated, and peace is shared.

Our Story

Our aim is to improve women’s status given their immense suffering prior to, during and after the civil war in Somalia. Women did not get their fair share in education, employment and other opportunities as well as resources. Somali tradition dictates that girl’s presence in the family is not permanent, because they will be married off to other family; parents think they are good to be exploited in the household as much as possible. Girls were discriminated against and disadvantaged by parents’ choice to send boys to school and keep them for the household tasks and responsibilities.
