On the occasion of International Women’s Day – March 8, 2026

Sanaag Social Workers Organization proudly celebrates the strength, resilience, and achievements of women and girls in our communities. Their leadership, courage, and contributions are essential for building peaceful, prosperous, and thriving societies.

We believe that empowering women and girls is key to creating stronger and more resilient communities. Through our programs and initiatives, we remain committed to promoting their participation, supporting their leadership, and improving their access to opportunities and resources.

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” reminds us that supporting women and girls not only benefits individuals but also strengthens families, communities, and societies as a whole.

Ending FGM requires more than one entry point.

Change happens when efforts are layered, in public spaces, within households, and across generations, with different approaches designed for each level. A community-centred strategy recognises that beliefs are shaped in multiple places, and they shift differently depending on where conversations happen.

FGM cannot be treated as a stand-alone issue. In communities, it intersects with health, education, economic realities, and family structures. Integrating FGM into broader systems, from schools to health services to empowerment programmes, has strengthened both reach and impact.

As Joanne Hemmings reflected:
“Anywhere you can have a dialogue, you can integrate FGM. Dialogue is essential to ending FGM. To renegotiate behaviours, and heal. Dialogue repeated over time and depth to get to the real issues.”

From public forums to couple dialogues to homestead conversations that reflected polygamous family contexts, the approach adapted to lived realities. And that’s where deeper shifts in attitudes and beliefs began to take root.

On this Human Rights Day, a reminder:

FGM is not “culture.” Not “tradition.” Not “just how things are.”
It’s a human rights violation.

As we close , we’re naming the violence including digital forms of GBV that continue to silence girls and reinforce harm. Online or offline, violence is violence.

4.3 million girls are at risk every year of FGM.
Let's uphold their dignity and protect their rights.

On this Human Rights Day, Sanaag Social Workers Organization (SSWO) proudly reaffirms its steadfast commitment to safeguarding and promoting the rights of every individual. Human rights are the foundation of dignity, freedom, and equality. At SSWO, we strongly believe that every person—especially women, girls, and marginalized groups—deserves to live safely, freely, and with dignity, and to have access to opportunities that enable them to thrive. On this important day, we reflect on the principles that underpin human rights: the right to live free from violence, discrimination, and persecution; the right to education, protection, and equitable opportunities for all children; and the importance of fostering communities where the rights and dignity of every individual are respected and upheld. SSWO calls on all stakeholders, partners, and community members to stand united in advancing human rights, promoting justice, and empowering vulnerable populations. Together, we can build a society where dignity, equality, and freedom are guaranteed for all.

Sanaag Social Workers Organization (SSWO) joins the global community in marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed annually from 25 November to 10 December. In the context of Somaliland, where women and girls continue to face harmful traditional practices, discrimination, and limited access to justice, this campaign serves as a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility to promote safety, dignity, and equal rights for all. This year’s global theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” reinforces the growing need to address emerging forms of gender-based violence, both online and offline. SSWO remains committed to raising awareness, engaging communities, and strengthening protective systems to eliminate all forms of GBV, including FGM/C, child marriage, and violence in public and private spaces. As we observe these 16 days, SSWO calls upon community leaders, youth, parents, and institutions to stand together in advancing a society where women and girls can live free from violence, fear, and discrimination. ogether, we can build a safer, more inclusive society.
