Bridging Peace and Livelihoods: How One Somali Organization is Transforming Coastal Communities!

Garowe, Somalia. The Somali Peace and Skills Development Organization, under the leadership of the Founder and Executive Director, is driving a critical shift in regional stability by tackling the root economic causes of conflict and piracy. By bridging the gap between peace building and vocational training, the organization delivers high- impact interventions, where they needed most. Through specialized conflict resolution workshops and targeted public awareness campaigns, the organization equips local communities with the mediation tools necessary to resolve disputes peacefully, laying a durable foundation for long term social cohesion and grassroots stabilization.

True and last peace cannot be built on words alone; it requires economic security and practical skills " said by Galan, the Founder and Executive Director of the organization. "By equipping our youth with modern vocational skills whether in maritime fishing along the Gulf of Aden or mediation techniques in our communities we are giving them a stake in a peaceful future.

The establishment of our new Peace Center will allow us to scale these efforts and ensure no vulnerable young
person is left behind. Recognizing that lasting peace is impossible without economic security, the organization’s mandate extends directly to Somalia's
strategic coastlines along the Gulf of Aden.

By training vulnerable youth in modern fishing techniques and supplying them with essential gear, the initiative creates viable, sustainable livelihoods that
actively deter recruitment into piracy.

This vital coastal outreach, combined with dedicated support programs for youth internally displaced from the Calmiskaad region, provides a crucial alternative to crime and exploitation. The upcoming establishment of the
organization's permanent Peace Center will further solidify these efforts, serving as a centralized operational hub to scale these life changing programs and protect both land and maritime security.

The End.

Socio-Economic Resilience is Key to Maritime Security in Puntland.

We are proud to share our latest Field Assessment Report:"Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities and Illicit Recruitment Risks Among Coastal Youth in Bari Region.

Our team on the ground in Bosaso and nearby coastal corridors interviewed 45 youth and 12 key community leaders. The data reveals a critical reality: over 78% of surveyed coastal youth lack a reliable
income, leaving them exposed to predatory financial lures from maritime criminal rings. True ocean security does not start at sea; it begins on the shore by empowering youth with market-driven vocational skills (TVET) and modern toolkits.

QANDALA INITIATIVE TACKLES ROOT COUSES OF PIRACY THROUGH YOUTH
VOCATIONAL TRAINING.

Qandala, Bari Region –The Somali Peace and skills DevelopmentOrganization (SPSDO) has successfully concluded a three days landmark training program Jan 7 to 10, 2026, for 40 youth in the Qandala district, aimed specifically at preventing maritime crime and radicalization.

The program recognizes that unemployment is the primary driver for youth involvement in piracy and extremist activities. By equipping this cohort with modern fishing equipment and deep-sea navigational skills, the initiative provides a profitable and legal alternative to the dangers of the illicit economy.

Our goal is to make the youth of Qandala the Protectors of their own waters” A young man with a career and future is a man who cannot be recruited into violence!
