The psychological toll of violence against women and girls in Sudan is profound, with victims haunted by the shadow of terrors they have had to endure.

These scars run deep – through the lives of individuals, families and communities at large.

– SIHA Network’s Report on the State of Violence Against Women and Girls in Sudan puts forward mental health as an issue as urgent as physical safety. Survivors need psychological support, safe spaces, and community care to begin healing from these hidden wounds.

“Breaking this [cycle of impunity] requires not only stronger legal frameworks, but also sustained support for the actors who make accountability possible,” highlighted Dr. Faizat Badmus-Busari, SIHA Network Regional Programme Manager, during our intervention at the Interactive Expert Panel.

At this session and alongside the oral statement we delivered, she reflected on the urgent realities facing women and girls in the Horn of Africa, together with the critical need for access to justice.

We reiterate our call on Member States and the international community to:
• Strengthen accountability for violations against women and girls;
• Hold perpetrators and chains of command responsible with no exceptions;
• Invest in women-led organizations and feminist legal networks; and
• Support gender-responsive justice systems that center survivors.

Ultimately, sustainable peace cannot exist where violations go unpunished.

“Unless you act now, you will have more blood on your hands,” our Regional Director Hala Al Karib warns the United Nations Security Council in her address on the ongoing crisis in Sudan yesterday.

In this powerful testimony, Hala describes over 1000 days of war and a conflict that has crossed every red line - genocide, mass displacement, a collapsed health system, the rampant spread of STIs (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B), starvation, mass r**e, unchecked foreign intervention, and the unfettered flow of arms into the country, fueling more violence.

Her message is clear: The future of Sudan cannot be built on impunity and inaction.

In her powerful op-ed “A Land Abandoned: The Cost of Global Silence on Darfur,” Ikhlass Ahmed reflects on decades of documented persecution, oppression, and violence against women in - from mass displacement to systematic sexual violence - and how global silence has enabled it to continue. Despite the horrors faced, women and grassroots networks are resisting, documenting the truth, and supporting survivors on the ground.

At SIHA Network, our work to document conflict-related sexual violence and protect those impacted has shown that resistance, resilience and the cost of being ignored are real.

📢 “Do not let this be one more forgotten war. Don’t let us become just another footnote for posterity. See us. Hear us. Stand with us. Because Darfur is still burning, but its people are still standing.” - Ikhlass Ahmed
