Today, 19 August 2026, AMARD joined humanitarian partners, NGOs, government representatives, and communities in Baidoa to commemorate World Humanitarian Day under the spirit of .

World Humanitarian Day is a moment to recognize the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of humanitarian workers who continue to serve communities affected by conflict, displacement, drought, and other crises.

As a Somali, minority-led humanitarian organization, AMARD remains committed to putting communities at the centre of humanitarian action—protecting dignity, strengthening resilience, promoting inclusion, and ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most.

We honour all humanitarian workers who serve with compassion and courage, often under extremely challenging circumstances.

Humanity is a shared responsibility. Let us continue to act for humanity.

Access to safe and clean water has become a reality for the people of Kulmis Weyna Village in Jowhar District. On Saturday, AMARD officially handed over the Kulmis Weyne Water Supply infrastructure to the community, marking an important milestone in strengthening sustainable and climate-resilient water services. This water infrastructure project will significantly improve daily access to clean water for households, reduce the burden of water collection, and support better health and hygiene outcomes for the community.

The project delivered a 25m³ elevated water tank, a solar-powered water supply system, green PVC-coated chain-link perimeter fencing, and a community water kiosk, providing reliable and sustainable access to safe water for the people of Kulmis Weyna Village.

This successful handover represents more than the completion of infrastructure—it is an investment in community resilience, dignity, and sustainable development. With the project now under community ownership, local structures, including the Water Management Committee, will manage and safeguard these facilities to ensure their long-term sustainability for future generations.

We sincerely thank the United Nations OCHA Somalia and Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) for its generous support in making this project possible. We also acknowledge the invaluable collaboration of the Hirshabelle State authorities, Jowhar District Administration, community leaders, and all partners whose commitment and cooperation contributed to the successful completion and handover of this project.

For many families in Ali-Warabay, Jowhar District, limited access to safe sanitation and seasonal flooding have increased health and protection risks, particularly for women, girls, older persons, and persons with disabilities.

With support from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF), AMARD has constructed flood-resilient, gender-segregated, and disability-inclusive latrines, providing communities with safer, more dignified, and accessible sanitation facilities. The intervention helps reduce open defecation, improve hygiene, and lower the risk of waterborne diseases while enhancing the safety and dignity of vulnerable populations.

Humanitarian Coordination Through Action

The impacts of recurrent drought and climate change continue to intensify humanitarian needs across Somalia, driving food insecurity, water scarcity, displacement, and the erosion of livelihoods. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated action, stronger partnerships, and sustained investments in resilience to protect vulnerable communities.

AMARD was honored to participate in the Somalia Country Humanitarian Forum (CHF) in Baidoa, which brought together government leaders, SoDMA, UN agencies, donors, NGOs, and humanitarian partners to strengthen coordination and advance collective action on drought response, climate preparedness, and humanitarian priorities. The forum underscored the importance of translating commitments into practical, locally led solutions that deliver timely and effective assistance to those most in need.

Together, through coordinated action and shared responsibility, we can build stronger, more resilient communities capable of withstanding future climate shocks and humanitarian crises.

The Agency for Minority Rights and Development (AMARD) was honored to participate in the East & Horn of Africa Business and Human Rights Dialogue in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside governments, businesses, civil society, and development partners advancing the Business and Human Rights agenda in the region.

During the session on Heightened Human Rights Due Diligence in Practice, AMARD emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing human rights risks affecting minority and marginalized communities. We highlighted the need to ensure that minorities, women, persons with disabilities, displaced populations, refugees, and other vulnerable groups are meaningfully included in decision-making and benefit from economic opportunities.

The dialogue reaffirmed that responsible business conduct requires community engagement, accountability, and a commitment to inclusion, equity, and sustainable development.

AMARD remains committed to promoting business practices that respect human rights and leave no one behind.
