How do we solve land access challenges, drive sustainable livelihoods and achieve self reliance and resilience for both refugees and host communities?
Yesterday 2nd July, community, cultural leaders, refugees, partners, district leaders and landlords convened in Terego District for the Regional Level Symposium hosted by YSAT Uganda in partnership with Oxfam in Uganda funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark ๏ฟฝ Danida
The symposium kicked off with urgent realities where YSAT presented on current land access hurdles across the ๏ฟฝ districts of Yumbe, Terego & Madi Okollo. This was followed by a diverse panel discussion that included Landlords, refugee reps, District Leaders and CSO partners in livelihoods who shared the floor to bridge policy gaps.
Action followed talk ๏ฟฝStakeholders split into breakout groups to tackle ๏ฟฝ themes: Land Acess, Social Cohesion, refugee Inclusion & Environmental protection
True sustainability starts with local commitment and ๏ฟฝ ๏ฟฝ are what we are working toward together:
๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ Fair and uniform land hiring rates and agreements across the ๏ฟฝ districts
๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ Faster, traditional, and official ways to resolve land disputes through OPM for refugees
๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ Better inclusion of refugees in local government planning inline with GoU ๏ฟฝ GRF pledges
๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ Planting for the future through environmental restoration to safeguard our planet ๏ฟฝ
The event wrapped up with powerful joint commitments from our refugee leaders, landlords, cultural institutions, UNHCR, OPM, and District Leaders.
We believe LAND = LIVELIHOODS ๏ฟฝ and LIVELIHOODS = PEACE ๏ฟฝ
