A Generous Donation from the TalibéE Association for the Children of Maison de la Gare

After travelling by car all the way from France to Senegal, members of the TalibéE Association came to Maison de la Gare to deliver a large donation for the children.

Clothing, books, bags, educational materials, and various supplies were brought to help meet the children’s needs and support their daily care and development.

Maison de la Gare warmly thanks the TalibéE Association for its generosity and for this meaningful commitment, which led its members to travel thousands of kilometres to bring their support directly to the children.

Mass Scabies Treatment Campaign in Four Koranic Schools in Saint-Louis

At the initiative of Maxim Laryn, a volunteer at Maison de la Gare, a mass scabies treatment campaign was organized in four Koranic schools in Saint-Louis.

This initiative followed a sensitization meeting focused on the prevention and management of scabies among talibé children, held at Maison de la Gare. The meeting provided an opportunity to raise awareness among Koranic school leaders and relevant stakeholders about ways to prevent the spread of the disease and the importance of prompt treatment.

To implement the campaign, four teams were formed, with the necessary medicines and equipment provided in advance. The teams then visited the four targeted Koranic schools to treat the children and reinforce prevention messages.

In total, more than one hundred talibé children were treated. Medicines, soap, and other essential hygiene supplies were also distributed to help prevent the spread of scabies and improve sanitary conditions in the Koranic schools.

The campaign was carried out with the support of nurses, under the supervision of the local health district, and with the participation of the Maison de la Gare staff. Awareness sessions were also conducted with the talibé children and Koranic school leaders, focusing on hygiene, prevention, and the management of scabies.

This action represents another important step in the ongoing efforts to prevent and combat scabies among talibé children in Saint-Louis.

Maison de la Gare sincerely thanks Maxim Laryn for his dedication, initiative, and commitment to making this project a reality in support of the health and well-being of talibé children.

Learning the Language of Humanity in Saint-Louis

This month, we invite you to discover the story of Peter Kiarie, a Kenyan volunteer who shares his reflections after his first four weeks with Maison de la Gare in Saint-Louis. Welcomed by his host family and immersed in Senegal’s famous spirit of Teranga, Peter describes a deeply meaningful experience filled with encounters, discoveries, and moments shared with talibé children.

At Maison de la Gare, he took part in the microfinance program and shared in the daily lives of the children through medical care, sports activities, the library, and visits to daaras. His experience also helped him understand that volunteering is not about “saving” others, but about being present, learning, listening, and building connections beyond differences.

For nearly a month, Maison de la Gare had the pleasure of welcoming Nils Haugen, an American volunteer who became fully involved alongside the team and the children.

During his stay, Nils took part in activities related to healthcare and hygiene, helping to improve the well-being and living conditions of the children supported by Maison de la Gare. He also participated in teaching activities, sharing his knowledge and time with the children in a spirit of listening, sharing, and learning.

Beyond his daily involvement, Nils also wanted to extend his support for the children by launching a fundraising campaign on his own initiative. Thanks to the funds raised through this campaign, he was able to co-finance the renovation of a daara, helping to concretely improve the living, learning, and reception conditions of the children who live there. This initiative reflects his generosity, commitment, and desire to make a lasting impact beyond the duration of his stay at Maison de la Gare.

Through his availability, generosity, and dedication, Nils brought wonderful energy to Maison de la Gare. The entire team sincerely thanks him for his commitment, support, and the moments he shared with the children, and wishes him every success in his future projects.

🩺 Together Against Scabies Among Talibé Children

Maison de la Gare hosted an awareness-raising meeting focused on the prevention and treatment of scabies among talibé children.

Initiated by Maxim, a volunteer at Maison de la Gare, the meeting brought together representatives from daaras and boarding schools in Saint-Louis, as well as key stakeholders in health, hygiene, and child protection, including the Saint-Louis Health District, child-focused organizations, the Regional Medical Service, the Senegalese Red Cross, the Hygiene Service, and the Maison de la Gare team.

The meeting was organized in response to a concerning situation observed at our health clinic. Between January and June 2026, 1,025 consultations for scabies were recorded, involving approximately 480 children from nearly 70 daaras and boarding schools in Saint-Louis. Scabies therefore accounts for nearly one in every two consultations at the clinic.

The discussions helped identify several challenges that can undermine the effectiveness of treatment, including the failure to treat close contacts, insufficient attention to clothing and bedding, and the recurrent return of some children to the clinic with scabies.

One key message emerged from the meeting: for scabies treatment to be truly effective, it must be addressed collectively and at the daara level.

🤝 A partnership has now been established with the Saint-Louis Health District, which has provided the necessary medication to begin treatment in the coming days.

This meeting represents an important step in mobilizing different stakeholders around a shared goal: protecting the health and improving the living conditions of children in daaras.

💙 At Maison de la Gare, we continue to work alongside daaras, health services, and our partners to help every child grow up in a healthier, safer, and more dignified environment.

A Safe Place Before a Night at the Bus Station

Ameth Diop had gone to the bus station to beg for something to eat. Tired and with nowhere to go, he was at risk of spending the night there when he was found by the Maison de la Gare team and brought to the center.

He was able to spend the night in the dormitory, in a safe and suitable place. The following day, he was able to wash, have breakfast, and receive new clothes.

Through his testimony, Ameth simply expresses his gratitude for the welcome he received.

At Maison de la Gare, every intervention matters. Being there at the right moment can sometimes prevent a child from spending the night on the streets.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who supports our work and helps us provide children with a safe place, protection, and dignified care.

Two Weeks of Volunteering at the Heart of the Agricultural Program

For two weeks, Antoine Mouchot and Sylvie Cabral shared daily life at Maison de la Gare by taking part in activities within the agricultural program.

During their stay, they were particularly involved in renovating the greenhouse, which had been damaged by severe weather. They took part in the restoration work, helping to bring this important space back to life and allowing the agricultural activities to continue.

Through their commitment and hands-on work, Antoine and Sylvie provided valuable support to the team and made a concrete contribution to the continuation of the agricultural program.

We sincerely thank them for these two weeks of hard work, exchange, and shared experiences at Maison de la Gare.

Microfinance: A pathway to strengthening women’s economic empowerment

On Avenue Macky Sall in Saint-Louis, Maguette Dieng’s stand is a daily example of the strength of local entrepreneurship. Through the sale of roasted peanuts, both plain and sugar-coated, she has developed an activity that now contributes to supporting her family’s needs.

Through Maison de la Gare’s (MDG) microfinance program, with the support of Friends of Senegal (FOS), Maguette received financial assistance that enabled her to increase her stock, better meet customer demand, and strengthen her business.

This initiative highlights the impact of microfinance in promoting economic empowerment by providing beneficiaries with the means to develop income-generating activities and build a more stable future.

🤝 Through its programs, Maison de la Gare continues to support communities by creating opportunities and promoting greater independence.
