Aywa International

Aywa International Jump-starting innovation for farmers, entrepreneurs and artisans in Senegal.

In 2003, Aywa began providing technical training to Senegalese students in wood/metal work, textiles, and other handicrafts and supporting them in marketing, quality control, and business development. A number of Senegalese-owned businesses have been incubated by our program, including Malika Monkeys, an artisan handicraft brand with distribution through stores in Dakar and direct sales around the

world. In 2008, Aywa’s focus expanded to include the incubation of technologies and solutions relating to energy, water, and agriculture. That year, our organization was awarded a grant from the World Bank Development Marketplace to develop an outboard motor that would increase mobility and access to markets for farmers along the Sine-Saloum River. Partnering with local women’s groups, Aywa planted hundreds of Jatropha trees to test the viability of producing Jatropha seed oil to be used as an alternative fuel for the motor. Since 2010, Aywa has hosted individuals and groups of design, marketing, and engineering students from organized university programs. As a result of these partnerships, we’ve not only had a hand in the launch of successful development pilots and design products, but also in the facilitation of cross-cultural and interdisciplinary exchange.

The main focus of our most recent trip to Senegal was the inauguration of the music studio.

Granted, we’re in fledgling mode. The facility isn’t ready — we’re still sound-engineering the room, building stuff, gathering and testing equipment — but we went for the launch with a big party. And, as you can see, music and dance are king here.

We are so thrilled to be a part of giving musicians a place to developers, record, and work internationally with other artists.

Our music studio is getting closer to completion. Levi Lawrence - a sound engineer from the US - is volunteering with Aywa over the next few months to get us started. Here is some footage of the acoustics going up

We hope to launch Aywa's Studio Yakaar before 2022! It started here, with our intern Sami Nandyal (Coumba Cisse) setting us on a path to fulfill Abdoulaye's dream of a community music studio in Malika. Help us meet his goal by supporting the aspiring musicians of Senegal on https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MTI1NDkz

In Malika, most have scarcely enough to support their quotidien needs, the daily cash to get by until the next morning’s hustle.

Eli is an entrepreneur in its most elemental sense. Mother of eleven children, she supports her family by purchasing items in ‘bulk’ and reconfiguring them into individual portions that she sells in her 4’ x 6’ sheet metal ‘boutique’ made from recycled barrels.

Today she has oil and eggs. That bottle of oil will be parsed into plastic baggies containing 1/4 cup’s worth, enough for customers to cook a meal. That flat of eggs will be boiled, those eggs sold singly as afternoon snacks to passers-by.

On a good day, she’ll take home enough to cover her own family’s basic needs. This is the reality of so many hard-working women in Senegal.

One December afternoon as I was walking through the streets of Dakar — the call to prayer ringing over the city — I saw a lanky Senegalese man prostrate himself on his prayer mat. This is by no means an unusual sight in a country that is 95% Muslim, save for the fact that this man was dressed in a Santa suit: A visual delight encapsulating the tolerance, inclusion, and celebratory spirit that characterize the people of Senegal.

As we at AYWA gather for our annual Christmas celebration meal with our artisans and their families tonight, we want to also wish you all a wonderful holiday season!

We’re always so pleased to see Senegal getting some of the international kudos it deserves!

The Senegalese capital has an aura that seeps into the soul. Bustling and addictive, it makes you want to stick around.

In 2020 we launched our prototype pirogue, built with the goal of showcasing recycled material potential and renewable energy solutions. This consider joining us as we begin development of alternative power solutions for the boat (solar, wind and biofuel) that could make Senegal's fishing industry safer and more environmentally sustainable for the future:

The first word you hear in this short video is Aywa (meaning lets go) as friends and bystanders came together to load what is now the keel on our prototype pirogue. Our goal is to showcase recycled material uses and renewable energy options within the Senegal fishing industry. This please join us as we begin the next phase of our project; developing alternative power solutions: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MjE4MjI= !
