🇲🇿 What happens when we ask girls what really affects their lives?

The Mutola Cup, Força’s national grassroots girls’ football league, starts by listening.

Across Mozambique, girls face different realities shaped by the practices, beliefs and attitudes in their communities. That is why Força starts from the grassroots: listening to girls, valuing their experiences and local knowledge, and identifying what can limit their future.

This testimony is part of a series sharing girls’ voices and the different challenges they face across Mozambique.

📍 This week, we highlight Nampula, where one of the issues identified is regional discrimination and the use of the term “xingondo.”

Used to refer to people from northern Mozambique, the term can be derogatory, conveying mockery or inferiority — including during football matches, precisely where sport should bring people together.

🌍 Today, on Global Day of Play, organised by s, we are reminded that play is not only a source of joy — it should also create spaces where everyone feels included, respected and part of a community.

Only 50% of Mozambicans say they trust people from other ethnic groups “somewhat” or “a lot.”* That is why challenging prejudice and promoting respect for differences is an important part of the conversations within the Mutola Cup.

🎙️ Joana de Maio Fazendeiro, player at Napipine Secondary School:

“Regardless of whether we are from the north, centre or south, we are all Mozambicans. Our cultural differences should be a source of pride, not discrimination.”

Because the right to play should also mean the right to belong — on and off the pitch.

And Joana leaves us with a powerful question:

🌍 Local voices. Local realities. Lasting change.

In Mozambique, the Copa Mutola talks engage more than 46,000 girls and local leaders in identifying the challenges affecting girls in their communities.

Every reality is different. That is why Força starts from the grassroots: listening to girls, valuing their experiences and local knowledge, and identifying practices and beliefs that can limit their future.

📍 Today, our focus is on Zambezia.

Corajosa, 14, speaks about the “machamba” - working on the family farm or agricultural fields - and the pressure girls face to leave school to help their families work the land.

🎙️ “The machamba is important, but my school is also important… You can’t stop going to school or give up because of the machamba.”

In Mozambique, 85.7% of working children are primarily involved in agriculture. Zambezia accounts for 26.2% of children involved in child labor—the highest percentage of all provinces. (UNICEF, 2022)

The Copa Mutola talks transform realities like these into conversations—and conversations into action.

This is Força in action: amplifying girls’ voices, using local knowledge to drive behavioral change, and contributing to a future where more girls stay in school, make their own choices, and build their own futures. 💜⚽

And what better way than with this moment from Inhambane, Mozambique, where our girls are singing and proudly celebrating their trophy as the district phase of the Mutola Cup comes to a close. ⚽🏆

Their joy captures what this day is all about: young people having opportunities to participate, grow and believe in their potential.

Across Mozambique, thousands of girls are doing just that through the Mutola Cup, our national grassroots girls’ football league integrated into the public-school system, combining football, learning and leadership.

This year, 46,110 girls across 1,537 teams, 93 districts and all 10 provinces of Mozambique are taking part.

On International Youth Day, we celebrate their voices, their leadership and the futures they are building.

Happy International Day of Friendship! 💜

At Força, we believe friendship starts with belonging.

In Mozambique—our Centre of Reference—through football, girls build friendships and supportive relationships that help them grow, find their voice and lead with confidence.

Globally, more than 135,000 girls have experienced that sense of belonging through Força across 33 countries and nearly 1,000 communities, made possible by the dedication of over 2,500 trained coaches and leaders.

The impact of that sense of belonging is clear. While only 31% of girls nationally transition to secondary school (UNESCO, 2022), 99% of girls participating in Força programmes continue their education to secondary school.

That’s the power of friendship. That’s the power of belonging.

📱⚽ Social media is part of the daily lives of millions of girls. The question is not whether they will use it, but whether they have the tools to use it safely and responsibly.

This week, our coaches in Mozambique use photos, role plays, games and group discussions to help girls reflect on social media, share experiences and think critically about what they see online.

At the Mutola Cup, football is just the starting point. We have developed an empowering educational content library for our coaches to help girls build confidence, strengthen critical thinking and navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

Why does this matter?

📱 In Mozambique, around 13% of children and adolescents who use the internet have experienced online sexual exploitation or abuse, with most cases linked to Facebook and WhatsApp. (UNICEF, Disrupting Harm, 2022).

💬 Globally, 58% of girls report experiencing online harassment or abuse, including cyberbullying, social pressure and unrealistic beauty standards. (Plan International, 2020).

⚽ Another step forward for the Mutola Cup in Mozambique! 💜

The official Mutola Cup draw in Lichinga, Niassa, brought together 16 public schools (8 secondary and 8 primary) that will take part in this year's competition.

During the event, Provincial Coordinator Cacilda Francisco Fernando highlighted the importance of respect, teamwork and fair play, while footballs were distributed to all participating schools.

Across the country, the Mutola Cup engages more than 46,000 girls, 1,537 teams, and reaches an estimated 461,100 indirect beneficiaries through families, schools and communities.

As the flagship programme of Força Foundation's football season in Mozambique, the Mutola Cup is much more than a tournament. Through football, girls develop leadership, self-confidence, health knowledge and essential life skills, while helping build more inclusive and equitable communities.

Every match is an opportunity to learn. Every team is shaping the next generation of leaders. 💜⚽

Durante o evento, a Coordenadora Provincial Cacilda Francisco Fernando reforçou a importância do respeito, do trabalho em equipa e do fair play, e foram entregues bolas a todas as escolas participantes.

Em todo o país, a Mutola Cup envolve mais de 46.000 meninas, 1.537 equipas e alcança cerca de 461.100 beneficiários indiretos através das famílias, escolas e comunidades.

Força Foundation International was proud to represent Senegal in , by — a global initiative bringing together 37 young designers from 37 countries to reimagine the national jersey as a canvas for storytelling.

Today, we’re also sharing a few -the-scenes moments from the creative — offering a glimpse into the ideas, and behind the final design.

Our Youth Design Leader, Marie Pierre, created a jersey rooted in , and national .

“The jersey is an embodiment of our entire nation. Its colours represent hope, faith in the future, wealth, culture, sacrifice and courage. The lion symbolises the bravery and strength of the Senegalese people — the Lions of Teranga. Senegal is a proud nation, guided by three Wolof values: Diom, Foula, Fayda.”

Behind the design is a young voice with a powerful story to tell.

Today, we cheer for Senegal on the pitch — and for the next generation shaping what representation can look like. 💚

🇲🇿 Today, Mozambique celebrates Independence Day.

Mozambique is our home—the place where the Força movement began 13 years ago.

At Força Foundation International, we believe is more than a nation’s history. It’s also every girl’s right to become independent—to , make her own , , and shape her own .

Through the Mutola Cup, becomes a pathway to independence. Girls gain , protect their , know their , and stay in .

The results speak for themselves:

⚽ 0.3% of girls in our programmes experience early pregnancy, compared with 48% nationally by age 18 (UNICEF Mozambique, 2025).

⚽ 0.2% experience child marriage or early unions, compared with 48% nationally (Girls Not Brides, 2026).

⚽ 99% complete primary school, compared with 58% nationally (World Bank, 2022).

⚽ 99% transition to secondary school, compared with 31% nationally (UNESCO, 2022).

Today, as Mozambique celebrates its independence, we celebrate every girl becoming independent too.
