Escalating Crisis at GPA and Alport Confirms IDC’s Concerns Raised During October Visit
The International Dockworkers Council (IDC) expresses its deep concern over the worsening situation at the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) and Alport, where port workers have now announced a general strike in response to persistent violations of welfare, labor rights, and fair treatment.
During the IDC delegation’s visit to Banjul in early October, our representatives met with port workers and union leaders who already warned of these serious and unresolved issues.
The developments now confirm the urgency of those discussions and the importance of international solidarity and oversight.
The IDC stands firmly with Gambian dockworkers and calls on Alport management and the Gambian government to immediately engage in genuine dialogue with workers and their representatives, restore fair labor practices, and ensure equal treatment for all employees, regardless of nationality.
As we highlighted during our visit, respect for workers’ dignity and welfare is not negotiable — it is the foundation of every sustainable and fair port system.
