Clean water does more than quench thirst. It brings people together.

When communities have reliable water services, they create stronger systems of shared responsibility. Water points become spaces where people connect, local caretakers support service delivery and communities work together to protect an essential resource.

Stories from communities around the world show that when water solutions are designed with sustainability and local ownership at their centre, they can continue creating impact for years.

But communities grow, needs change and climate pressures increase. Continued investment is needed to ensure water systems remain reliable for everyone.

Because water is not only about access.

It is about dignity, opportunity and the strength of communities.

Spotlight Nigeria 🇳🇬 | A toilet can change a child’s school experience

For many children, going to school is about learning, friendships and building dreams for the future.

But when schools lack clean water and safe toilets, learning becomes harder.

In Nigeria, WaterAid is working with partners to ensure students have access to the WASH services they need to learn with dignity.

At a school in Lagos State serving 720 students and 53 teachers, WaterAid improved access to:

💧 Clean and safe water through a solar powered borehole
🚻 Better toilets for students and staff
🚿 Private shower facilities for girls to manage their periods safely
♿ Accessible toilets for students with disabilities
🧼 Handwashing facilities and hygiene education

Before these improvements, students had to rely on unsafe water and broken toilets. Some girls missed school during their periods because they did not have a private and safe place to manage menstrual hygiene.

14 year old Veronica shared:

“Now that we have female friendly toilet, girls are coming to school more often. Some people would miss school for that week because they weren’t comfortable with toilets... It would affect marks.”

Every child deserves a school where they can learn without barriers.

Clean water. Safe toilets. Good hygiene.

These are not extras. They are essential for education, health and dignity.

A safe delivery starts with clean water. 💧

For midwife Shanette Khaula Shamu, water is one of the most important tools in protecting mothers and babies.

“Water is important. It is the key tool to the health of the mother and the child.”

During childbirth, clean water helps health workers:

💧 Wash their hands and prevent infections
💧 Keep delivery areas clean and safe
💧 Protect mothers and newborns from harmful bacteria
💧 Provide quality and dignified care

Without water, infection prevention and control becomes impossible.

This is why WASH in healthcare facilities is not a luxury. It is not an additional service. It is a foundation of safe healthcare.

Spotlight Liberia 🇱🇷 | Water bringing dignity to mothers and communities

“You have water everywhere. Even after giving birth, before I came home I was able to take a bath.”

For Hawa Perry, welcoming her baby girl Jebbeh was made more special by being in a health facility where water, sanitation and hygiene supported her comfort and dignity.

Through WaterAid Liberia’s work, a local health facility has been strengthened with improved WASH services, including:

💧 A dedicated delivery room bathroom
💧 A shower for mothers after childbirth
💧 Gender responsive sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities
💧 Handwashing facilities for patients and visitors
💧 Improved access to safe drinking water for the surrounding community

The project is benefiting an estimated 4,000 people, including mothers, newborns, health workers and community members.

Because water in healthcare means more than infrastructure.

It means safer births.
It means dignity for women.
It means healthier communities.

But many healthcare facilities across West Africa still lack the water and sanitation services needed to provide safe and quality care.

Hawa’s story reminds us that change is possible. With the right investments and commitment, every mother can experience the dignity and safety she deserves.

1.2 million people in Liberia – one in five – don’t have clean water
close to home.

Imagine having to walk every day just to find water.

And across West Africa, millions of people continue to face the daily reality of limited access to safe water.

What does climate resilience look like in practice?

It looks like a health centre where healthcare workers no longer have to leave patients behind to fetch water.

It looks like maternity wards with clean water and sanitation facilities that protect the dignity of women.

It looks like proper hygiene and waste management systems that help prevent infections and keep communities safe.

Before improvements were made through the Beseya Blon project, a community health centre in Touna faced significant challenges accessing water and maintaining hygiene standards. Today, staff and patients benefit from reliable water, improved sanitation and safer healthcare conditions.

These improvements go beyond infrastructure.

They strengthen health services, support infection prevention, and help communities become more resilient in the face of climate-related challenges.

Because when health facilities have reliable WASH services, they are better prepared to protect lives.

Water is not just part of healthcare. Water makes healthcare possible.

Climate change is making the water crisis harder. Women are paying the price.

For Bintu, a 50-year-old mother of eight, fetching water is more than a daily task. It is a physical burden that leaves her exhausted, with persistent pain in her chest and back. On the days she collects water, little energy remains for farming, trading, caring for her family, or earning an income.

And she is not alone.

Across many communities, changing weather patterns, prolonged dry spells, and increasing pressure on water resources are forcing families to spend more time and effort securing the water they need to survive.

When water becomes harder to access, women and girls are often the first to feel the impact.

Time that could be spent earning a living, attending school, or caring for their families is instead spent searching for water.

Climate resilience is not only about adapting to extreme weather. It's about ensuring communities have reliable, sustainable access to safe water, even in the face of a changing climate.

Because no one should have to sacrifice their health, education, or livelihood to access a basic human right.

Climate resilience starts with water.

One of the greatest injustices of our time is that access to something as fundamental as clean water is still treated as a privilege.

Clean water should not determine whether a child arrives at school ready to learn, whether a mother can keep her family healthy, or whether a community can prosper.

🇧🇫 Country Programme Spotlight | Burkina Faso

When climate change makes farming harder, innovation can make communities stronger.

For Zela Soma, a farmer from Kounandia, Burkina Faso, finding affordable fertiliser has become one of the biggest challenges to growing food for his family. But thanks to WaterAid's EcoSan project, he has discovered something unexpected.

Safe sanitation can also help grow healthier crops.

Through EcoSan technology, treated urine and faeces are transformed into organic fertiliser that farmers can use on their fields. After testing it on his maize farm, Zela saw encouraging results and is now helping other community members learn how the system works.

"We didn't know that urine could become urea or that faeces could become fertiliser. Now we've seen it ourselves."

This is more than a sanitation project. It is a climate adaptation solution that is helping communities improve hygiene, strengthen food production and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Every community deserves solutions that protect both people and the planet.
