Tamba was 14 years old when he joined Plan International Sierra Leone sponsorship programme.

🏫Sponsorship became a turning point, easing his access to education and opening doors that once seemed out of reach.

Among the many moments that shaped his journey, one stands out clearly.

Today, Tamba has built a successful career and is giving back to his community.

During our recently held West and Central Africa Alumni Summit in Lomé, 7 out of 14 country offices of our alumni network were recognized and awarded for driving change and creating lasting impact in their respective countries. Three individuals were also honored for their commitment and contributions to the success of the alumni initiative.

• Togo received the award for Most Promising Alumni Network
• Ghana was honored as Best Country for Alumni Partnership & Co-creation.
• Guinea-Bissau received the award for Best Country for Alumni Empowerment
• Sierra Leone was recognized for Best Alumni Sustainability Strategy
• Senegal received the award for Best Country, Alumni Initiative & Engagement.
• Guinea was honored with Most Innovative Alumni Initiative
• Francis, focal point for Liberia, was recognized as Most Promising Alumni Coordinator
• Ousseynou, Country Director for Togo was honored as Alumni champion for WACA
• Josephine, WACA Reg. Sponsorship Lead was honored as “Alumni Pilot Trailblazer”
• Juli-Collette, WACA Reg. Policy & advocacy Specialist was honored as “Alumni Initiative Catalyst”

Beyond these recognitions, the awards serve as a pat on the shoulder; motivating the winners to do more and continue making an impact in their respective countries.

Alumni representatives from ten countries across West and Central Africa convened in Lomé, Togo for this year’s WACA Regional Alumni Summit, held under the theme “Self-Reliance and Empowered to Give Back to Community.”

More than just a gathering, the summit served as a dynamic platform where former sponsored children and program participants of Plan International reconnected, exchanged ideas, and developed strategic action plans on digital advocacy, resource mobilization, and fundraising. Alumni in Guinea participated in a media engagement session on Guinea’s national television station (RTG) to discuss ongoing initiative, “Alumni Professional Movement.” This initiative aims to mobilize professionals who were formerly sponsored children and program participants of Plan International Guinea to lead community development efforts, local resource mobilization and empower young girls and children. Plan International Sierra Leone recently completed a validation of its Sponsorship Alumni Operation Guide to strengthen alumni engagement and drive collective action for lasting impact.

The strategic framework provides a clear roadmap on how former sponsored children and program participants can stay connected, empowered, and positioned as champions for child rights, gender equality, and community transformation. By fostering structured collaboration, the guide ensures alumni become active partners in advocacy, leadership, and social impact initiatives.

“Our alumni are not our implementing partners, but community change-makers who are expected to amplify our work. Amid a shrinking donor funding market, the Guinea-Bissau Alumni chapter have embraced an innovative strategy to generate sustainable revenue internally; at their headquarters in the Bafata region, they have established a dynamic social enterprise unit, specializing in the production of high-quality school bags crafted from locally sourced fabrics and offering top tier catering services to individuals, corporate organizations, and institutions.
Notably, all revenue generated through these efforts is reinvested into alumni-led initiatives, further strengthening the impact of their work within sponsorship communities. This self-sustaining model not only fosters economic independence but also enhances local development and educational support. Plan International West and Central Africa

Few days ago, over 100 former Sponsored Children (SCs) graduated in Sierra Leone and transitioned to join our Alumni Network with a strong commitment to creating an impact in their communities and mentoring fellow SCs.
