A 2-day Youth Forum is underway in Yaounde, Cameroon. Young creators from film, music, fashion and arts across several African countries are discussing and exploring how the culture and creative industries can better drive economic empowerment, social cohesion and opportunity.
Cameroon’s Minister of Youth and Civic Education, H.E. Mounouna Foutsou, joined UNDP representatives, the African Union Commission of Women and Youth and national youth council representatives at the opening ceremony.
In his opening remarks, the minister noted that when creativity meets civic engagement, talent can become a true instrument of peace. "Our ambition must be clear: to make every young creator an ambassador for peace, civic responsibility, and social harmony." Minister Mounouna Foustou highlighted.
Setting the stage for various interventions, Nirina Kiplagat, UNDP RSCA Governance and Peacebuilding Coordinator, described the Forum as being designed as a space for evidence, exchange and action. "Our ambition is not simply to describe what is possible, but to help define together with young creatives how promising ideas and initiatives can be supported, connected and scaled to shape the future of the sector and contribute to greater social cohesion, peace and sustainable development." She remarked.
Martin Hart-Hansen, Resident Representative & UNDP Representative is encouraged young creatives to see the forum as an opportunity to be more than a celebration of African creativity.
"Let it be a working session for change. Let us leave with stronger partnerships, practical recommendations and a shared commitment to ensure that creative talent can become a sustainable opportunity.”
Several panel discussions, interspersed with music, the spoken word and artistic performances, will continue for the two days.
