Message from the Peace and Justice Advocacy Network (PJ AN)

Today, January 18th, as Sierra Leone observes National Remembrance Day, the Peace and Justice Advocacy Network joins the nation in honoring the memory of all those who lost their lives during the civil war and in reflecting on the painful lessons of our past.

This day reminds us that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, accountability, unity, and respect for human dignity. As we observe the moment of silence at 12:00 noon, we call on all citizens, leaders, and institutions to renew their commitment to peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the protection of human rights.

May the sacrifices of the past continue to guide us toward a future anchored in peace, justice, and national cohesion.

As part of our commitment, the Peace and Justice Advocacy Network – SL held an interactive session with children from the Children’s Forum Network (National Body) to raise awareness about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and the importance of taking the HPV vaccine.

The engagement was designed to educate the young participants in a simple, age-appropriate way about what HPV is, how it spreads, and the serious health risks it can cause later in life, including cervical and other related cancers. We emphasized that HPV is a common virus and that most people may get it at some point, but the good news is that it can be prevented through timely vaccination.

The session created a safe space where the children could ask questions and express their thoughts. We addressed common myths and misconceptions about the vaccine, helping them understand that the HPV vaccine is safe, effective, and free for girls between the ages of 11 and 18 under the national campaign.

We also highlighted the importance of taking the vaccine now, as it provides protection before any exposure to the virus. It was inspiring to see the level of interest and engagement from the children, and we believe that equipping them with the right information will empower them to make informed health decisions and become advocates among their peers.

This engagement is part of our continued efforts to support the national HPV Multi-Age Cohort (MAC) Campaign and ensure that no girl is left behind when it comes to access to life-saving vaccines.

The Peace and Justice Advocacy Network SL (P-JAN) is proud to stand alongside other youth-led organizations and Adolescents in advancing the upcoming HPV Multi-Age Cohort (MAC) Campaign.

On 13th November 2025, the Ministry of Health, through the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) and partners, convened an important engagement at the UNICEF Sierra Leone Headquarter in Freetown. The session brought together adolescents, youth-led groups, and development partners, to strengthen collective efforts ahead of the national HPV-MAC vaccination campaign—aimed at reaching 1 million girls aged 11–18 in Sierra Leone.

As a youth organization, we recognize the vital role that young people play in spreading accurate information, combating myths, and generating demand within their communities. We are fully committed to using our voices and platforms to amplify the campaign, raise awareness, and help ensure every eligible girl is informed and protected.

This engagement reaffirmed a strong, shared commitment among youth groups, to drive the campaign forward—through schools, communities, social media, and beyond.

We remain hopeful for continued collaboration beyond this campaign to ensure sustainability and lasting impact in advancing adolescent health in Sierra Leone.
