Limba People of Sierra Leone The limba people of Sierra Leone comprises of 12 dialects.

Members of the Limba tribe believe that they have always lived in Sierra Leone in the Wara Wara mountains and were probably the first rulers of the country. It is believed by some historians that like the Temne, they are descendants of a once-powerful tribe coming from Fouta Djallon during the 12th century. They were also brilliant scholars and philosophers brought their knowledge of agriculture and trade with them and with that built a society based on this sole ideal: If you work and respect the land properly then you are worthy to enjoy the fruits of your labor. During the colonial era of Sierra Leone, many Limba people were captured and sold at Bunce Island as slaves to the Americas through the Atlantic slave trade. To escape this, many Limba people traveled to the capital city of Freetown and the Western area and as a result, most Limba are located in these places

The Matorma is a traditional masquerade figure and spiritual entity of the Limba People of Sierra Leone. Traditionally, it comes out to seek out witchdoctors and other evildoers.

Cultural and Spiritual Role
Community protection: The Matorma identifies and neutralizes spiritual threats and malevolent actors.

Spiritual bridge: It connects the ancestors and the living during rituals and community events.

Senior status: Only senior, initiated members may perform it.

Symbolic Elements of the Costume
Red head and cowrie shells: The red head warns harmful actors of approaching danger, while the cowrie shells spiritually blind malevolent entities.

Hands: The left hand holds a horsetail for protection and signalling; the right holds a cutlass for invisible spiritual attacks.

Ritual Rules
The kneeling custom: When the Matorma kneels, everyone in public must kneel too. Failing to do so implies guilt as an evildoer and risks a severe curse. ゚ ゚
