SAINTS MARTHA, MARY AND LAZARUS

Among Jesus’ closest friends, at whose home he delighted in being a guest were the two Bethany sisters, Martha and Mary, and their brother Lazarus. Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb of the command of the one who humiliated death. John says, “Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus” (11:5) - it was with them that he spent the last few days before the Passion. The Church today honours Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Martha, presumably the eldest, was ever “busy about much serving”, anxious as ever about her guest’s comfort. She has thus become the prototype of the activist Christian who seeks cooperation even in terms of hospitality, that oldest of Christian virtues, while Mary has come to be regarded as the symbol of the contemplative life. Yet, Martha was obviously also a woman of deep faith with unbounded trust in the Lord’s divine power— “If you had been here, Lord, my brother would not have died! But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask of him” (Jn 11:21-22).

It was to Martha that Jesus declared: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die”—words uttered at every Christian burial. Her counter-declaration, however, is a classic example of a thriving faith: “Yes Lord! I do believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world” (Jn 11:25-27).

Reflection: “The essential is certainly that, in the world as it is, the Lord’s disciples should be channels of God’s salvific action, by being ceaselessly purified, enlightened and comforted by frequently approaching the God of tenderness and pity” (Pope Saint John Paul II).

SAINTS LOUIS AND ZELIE MARTIN
Parent of St.Therese of the Child Jesus

When Louis Martin and his bride, Zelie, were married in 1858, they promised that they would “serve God first” together. They knew that putting God first in their lives would help them to always live with love.

Louis was a watchmaker. Zelie made beautiful lace to help support their growing family. They taught their children to know, love, and serve God. The Catholic Church was an important part of their family life.

Like all married couples, they sometimes faced disappointments and sadness; four of their nine children died at a young age. They turned to God in difficult times and grew more deeply in love as they shared their sorrows and joys with one another.

In 1877, when Thérèse, the Martin’s youngest daughter, was only four years old, Zelie became very ill and died. The family was brokenhearted, but they remembered that Zelie prayed with them to help them understand that her illness and death was part of God’s plan.

Louis lovingly raised his daughters. He generously gave his permission as each one asked to join the convent. He saw this as a sign that God was pleased that he and Zelie had shared their faith and love with their children.

Zelie and Louis Martin’s lives show us that when we live with love, we grow in holiness. The Martins are such a wonderful example of holiness that Pope Benedict named them “Blessed” in 2008 and Pope Francis officially recognized them both as saints. They are the first married couple to ever be canonized together.

FEAST OF SAINT THOMAS - APOSTLE

St Thomas, whose Aramaic name te’ômâ, translated “Didymos” in Greek, means the “twin”, was an unlearned simple fisherman from Galilee. He was called by Jesus to be one of his 12 Apostles. A glimpse of Thomas’ great love for his master is evident at the time when he was ready to accompany Jesus to the house where Lazarus had just died, though the other Apostles feared being stoned by the Jews in Judaea—“Let us also go; that we may die with him!” (Lk 11:16) It was his declaration at the Last Supper: “Lord we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (Jn 14:5) that drew the assertion from Jesus: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (Jn 14:6). He is called the “Doubting Thomas” for his refusal to believe in Jesus’ Resurrection when told of it by the other Apostles. Present with them at Jesus’ second apparition, Thomas made that timeless act of faith: “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28).

Theomas’ missionary activities are said to have been, among other places, chiefly in India where he is believed to have landed in 52 AD. In fact, he is to Kerala what Saint Francis Xavier is to Goa! Thomas is believed to have met his death by the spear at Mylapore (now San Thome) in Madras, where the miraculous cross of St Thomas is now venerated.

St Thomas was declared the Apostle of India by Pope Paul VI in 1972.

Reflection: “By this doubting of Thomas we are more confirmed in our belief than by the faith of the other apostles” (St Gregory the Great).
