"When women have access to financial opportunities, entire communities prosper."

Yet, for many women in Sierra Leone, access to formal financial services remains a challenge.

According to the World Bank Global Findex Database -2021 reveals that only 25% of women in Sierra Leone have access to formal financial services. Similarly, a national study by the Ministry of Finance found that over 72% of informal sector workers-most of whom are women engaged in petty trading and farming, consider traditional banking too expensive, too distant, and burdened with complicated procedures.

The challenge is not a lack of willingness to save; it is a lack of access.

To address this gap, Caritas Sierra Leone Makeni, with support from DAHW, is implementing the Socio-Economic Empowerment Project for Women, Adolescent Girls, and Persons Living with Disabilities.

Through this project, 60 Village Savings and Loan Association [VSLA] groups have been established, 30 in Bombali District, and 30 in Karene District, bringing together 600 women to save together, access small loans, grow their businesses, and strengthen their household incomes.

The recent handover of VSLA savings boxes and record-keeping materials is more than the distribution of equipment. It provides the tools needed to promote transparency, accountability, and effective financial management within each group, laying the foundation for sustainable economic empowerment.

When women are equipped with the right knowledge, tools, and opportunities, they invest in their families, educate their children, grow their businesses, and contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.

Achieving sustainable economic empowerment requires strong partnerships, shared commitment, and continued investment in community-led solutions. We welcome collaboration with government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and local leaders to expand opportunities for women and ensure that no one is left behind.

Together, we can build stronger communities, one woman, one savings group, and one opportunity at a time.

Thirty community teachers in Bombali District have been trained on Financial Literacy under the Socio-Economic Empowerment Project for Women, Adolescent Girls, and Persons Living with Disabilities. Supported by DAHW and implemented by Caritas Sierra Leone Makeni, the training prepares community teachers to mentor Village Savings groups, promoting a culture of saving, financial inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods across project communities.

Lasting change begins when communities are empowered to lead their own development.

As part of the Socio-Economic Empowerment Project, Caritas Sierra Leone Makeni is training community teachers on Village Savings and Loan in Bombali District. These local facilitators will guide VSLA Members in adopting sound savings and lending practices that strengthen household resilience and promote sustainable economic empowerment.

These young learners are becoming ambassadors for positive change within their schools and communities. Guided by our field staff, they are being equipped with the knowledge and skills to promote Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), environmental cleanliness, and healthy behaviors among their peers.

Through the Socio-Economic Empowerment Project for Women, Adolescent Girls, and Persons Living with Disabilities, Caritas Sierra Leone Makeni is establishing School Health Clubs as platforms for learning, leadership, and peer-to-peer education. These clubs will play a vital role in fostering safe, inclusive, and healthy school environments while encouraging pupils to become champions of positive social and behavior change.

With the valued support of DAHW, we are empowering young leaders today to build healthier, more resilient communities for tomorrow.

The Grace Period Verification Exercise for Project Affected Persons [Traders] under the World Bank Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project [RUSLP] has commenced and will run until 29 June 2026.
This exercise is intended for traders who were not verified during the recently concluded verification exercise.
Please note that only traders who were registered during the June 2024 registration exercise and possess a valid Seller ID Number are eligible for verification during this grace period.
In addition, traders who were previously verified but do not yet have a National Identification Card are strongly encouraged to obtain one as soon as possible.
The verification process is completely free of charge. No payment is required at any stage of the process.
Traders who were not verified during the previous exercise are advised to visit the Caritas Office at the Pastoral Center, Makeni, for verification.
Affected traders are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure they are properly verified before the exercise closes on 29 June 2026.
