WIND-SL Organizes Support for Women Through Loan Resolution for Economic Empowerment. _NLe 48,000 Distributed in Kombayendeh Town, Lei Chiefdom, Kono District:

In a significant initiative aimed at supporting economic empowerment among women, forty-eight thousand New Leones (NLe 48,000) were disbursed among 48 beneficiaries in Kombayendeh Town, located in the Kono District. This event marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to uplift vulnerable women through sustainable financial support.

The program, which is designed to resolve loans and create economic opportunities, began in March 2021 with a modest group of 20 women organized into four groups. This initiative emerged in response to the ongoing conflicts between crop farmers and cattle herders in the Lei Chiefdom, a situation that highlighted the urgent need for financial empowerment among women. The project is a collaborative effort by the Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD) and MEDICO International the funding partner, under the broader framework of “Promoting Sustainable Livelihood and Economic Safety for Vulnerable Youth and Women.”

Since the project's inception, the initiative has seen substantial growth, expanding from 20 beneficiaries in four groups in 2021 to a total of 48 beneficiaries organized into eight groups at present. Each member receives One Thousand New Leones (NLe 1,000) for the period of six months, after every six months the participants collectively pay a small amount of Two Hundred New Leones (NLe 200) each, which is pooled together to provide further support to new members joining the project.

The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NMJD for their consistent advocacy and support through this initiative and to MEDICO International for providing the necessary funding. They shared how the program has significantly impacted their lives, enabling them to achieve greater self-reliance, cover school charges for their children, establish and sustain small businesses, and contribute to the smooth management of their homes alongside their husbands.

Special recognition was given to Mrs. Hannah Kumba Charles Alie, the National Coordinator for Women In Development Sierra Leone (WIND-SL), who received a premium gratitude for her insightful leadership and commitment to women’s development in Kono District and the country at large.

The beneficiaries collectively prayed for an increased funding for both NMJD and WIND-SL, emphasizing the need for support to incorporate even more vulnerable women into this life changing program, thereby extending its reach and benefits throughout the community.

Thanks 🙏

WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT SIERRA LEONE (WIND -SL) ORGANIZED WOMEN IN FALABA DISTRICT SHARE OUT ( Three hundred and twenty-eight thousand and six Leones (NLe 328,006):

On Saturday, 2nd November 2024, the Falaba District Branch of Women in Development Sierra Leone WIND-SL staged a resounding share-out event of NLe 328,006 in Masofinia town a major trade center in Neya Chiefdom Falaba district graced with the attendance of a number of the community, chiefdom, and district stakeholders including traditional authorities and hundreds of community women.

In her statement, Sayo Sesay, Neya Chiefdom Women in Development Chairlady, expressed delight over the advent of the organization in their community, which has led to several gains, including peace-building among women farmers and increased economic capability. Before the intervention of WIND-SL in the chiefdom, Madam Sesay said they were very incapacitated to adequately attend to their children's educational and financial needs and properly take care of other familial responsibilities, a situation which she said is no longer the case since the arrival of WIND-SL in the community. According to her, the organization had mobilized them into functional groups and provided them training in village savings, basic group administration, record keeping, and conflict management, including advocacy, leading to the restoration of their dignity and worth in their communities and homes.

She continued that the money disbursed was contributed by a total of 278 members of four out of the eight groups through a Village Savings and Loan Association mechanism consisting of components of interest and social funds over a period that spanned 52 months, and the ceremony which saw a vibrant Masofinia was to transparently disburse the total saved amongst the contributors. According to her, this was the first time in the history of the community for women to be this organized and generate such an amount of money independently. Chairlady Sayo Sesay said that the unfavorable condition of their land topography and terrible road situation continue to keep them out of contact with development and development agents, including the government, except WIND-SL, which has taken the challenge to reach out to their needs.

She appealed to the leadership of WIND-SL to continue its support to their groups and disclosed their planned activities, which she said include large-scale agriculture, packaging, branding, marketing, and continuation of the savings initiatives, and meaningful social activities, including cultural festivals. Presently, she said the organization has established a tailoring training center to which a considerable number of young women and men have been admitted to be trained.

Beneficiary group members expressed similar sentiments and pleaded for continued support. The National Coordinator of Women in Development Sierra Leone-WIND-SL is Mrs. Hannah Kumba Charles Alie. She disclosed to this medium that the organization is an exclusively women-focused Non-Governmental Civil Society Organization driven by a commitment to promoting gender equity and women's empowerment for social inclusion and collective progress. As an organization, she noted their interest in community mobilization to transform society with hope for women and a brighter future for every child and youth.

According to her, their intervention in Falaba district came following a Women's Community Dialogue Meeting for Women's Peace and Security Before, During, and After Elections staged in Teya town in Sandor chiefdom to which representatives were present from Falaba district who ended up expressing interest in the service of WIND-SL in their peace fragile chiefdom and Falaba district then following the June 2023 General Elections. The request according to Mrs. Charles Alie was followed by several fact-finding meetings and stakeholder engagements eventually leading to their full operations in Falaba and the apparent formation of the currently impressively functional 8 women's groups 4 of which had contributed the disbursed sum she disclosed, as the women had pleaded for grants which WIND-SL with support from Irish Aid Program Grant through Christian Aid Sierra Leone and Network Movement for Justice and Development NMJD provided to kick off the savings initiative amongst the women.

She encouraged the women to continue effectively implementing ideas gained and to maintain interest in agriculture, trade, and effective advocacy for inclusion in leadership and decision-making positions in their communities. She discouraged them from acts of forcefully sending their girls into marriages, especially those below 18 years, but encouraged support for their girls' education as legislative mechanisms have been intensified against violators and said they would not appreciate a situation involving any of the women of the organization. Mrs. Charles Alie pleaded with the government and other development actors to support WIND-SL to continue its community mobilization, empowerment, development, and advocacy activities in the country, especially in communities in deprived situations.

Thanks 🙏
