​Representational Safety: The pressure of representing their entire demographic creates a fear of public failure, forcing conservative choices and trapping them in unfulfilling roles.

No shadow should ever fall on an innocent childhood.

​In June 2026, a devastating reality hit 3 years old "Battu" in the Eastern Region of Sierra Leone.

Battu had been living happily with her grandmother, enjoying the simple joys of village life moonlight stories and sharing meals with other children.

​Tragically, her grandmother's younger sister asked to take Battu to stay with her for a little while.

During this visit, little Battu was secretly subjected to the Bondo society and forced through Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), completely unbeknownst to her parents and her devoted maternal aunt.

​Weeks later, as Battu grew increasingly weak, pale, and struggling to heal from her injuries, the horrifying secret finally came to light.

​Her aunt, feeling utterly betrayed and let down by family members who were complicit in the act, courageously reached out for help on social media. That is when WGF-SL stepped in. We provided her with essential counseling and navigated referral pathways to safeguard this little girl and ensure she received the urgent medical help she needed.

​Without swift intervention, Battu would have been just another statistic. Sadly, many still view FGM as a harmless tradition, blind to the severe short, medium, and long-term dangers it poses to innocent lives.

Protecting women and girls from FGM/C should always be about human rights and health not political posturing 🚫.

​Using the fight to end FGM/C as a tool for political leverage or personal relevance only distracts from the urgent, life saving work that needs to be done.

​Effective eradication requires depoliticized solutions like:

👁​Authentic community education
👁​​Strong, consistent legal protections
👁​​Putting the well-being of survivors and at-risk females first.

Celebrating 8 Years of Impact: The Gial Pekin Dem Foundation Story
​Eight years ago, a spark of resilience turned into a movement. Today, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the 8th Anniversary of the Gial Pekin Dem Foundation!
​What started as a response to deep-rooted injustices has blossomed into a sanctuary of hope, education, and empowerment for girls across Sierra Leone.
​Our Origin: From Personal Resilience to Collective Action
​Our foundation’s journey is deeply personal. It was inspired by a survivor our founder who overcame various abuses, including forced Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM). Growing up in a rural community where girls were treated as subordinate to boys, she was fortunate to have a family that fiercely valued education and supported her to the peak of her academia.
​Later, as a young teacher, she witnessed the same systemic barriers holding other girls back. The turning point came during a public exam:
​A young girl got her first period right before sitting for her test. Lacking menstrual pads, teachers were about to send her home effectively putting her future on hold. Our founder intervened, bought the necessary sanitary pads, and saved her exam day.
​When this story was shared online, a wave of global encouragement followed. That collective push led to our official registration in 2018 as a community-based organization.
​8 Years of Impact: What We Have Achieved Together
​Operating proudly as a volunteer-based organization, we have weathered storms and celebrated monumental victories without ever closing our doors to the girls who need us. Over the last 8 years, we have:
​Protected & Rescued: Saved and supported survivors and girls at risk of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
​Funded Justice: Paid legal and logistical costs to ensure victims of sexual abuse could pursue justice.
​Championed Education: Provided continuous educational support and mentorship for young girls.
​Advocated for Reform: Stood on the frontlines advocating for legal reforms to criminalize harmful practices like FGM.
​Built Leaders: Mentored youth who are now actively leading change in various professional and social spaces.
​Supported Families: Provided essential aid to vulnerable families within our communities.
​Much of this advocacy rigor was sharpened through our founder’s journey as a member of Amnesty International Sierra Leone, where she was mentored and gained vital professional development in human rights advocacy.
​
The Next Chapter: Realigned & Stronger
​We have returned with renewed strength and a sharper vision. As we look to the future, the Gial Pekin Dem Foundation has realigned its programs to focus on:
​A Social Change Movement: Driving systemic progress across Gender & Climate Justice, Governance, Empowerment, Equality, and Development.
​Rural Community Support: Deepening our reach to uplift those in greatest need across rural Sierra Leone.

Communities have lost a lot of girls and youths to various pandemics including drug addiction due to lack of mentorship.

With our mentorship program, we have successfully supported young people to navigate life and find meaning into their career and personal lives.

We have worked closely with families and caregivers to get the best out of girls and youths who are currently supporting development in their communities and the country.

WI Gial Pekin Dem Foundation is a movement which thrives beyond projects but community driven needs that leaves everlasting impact.
