Congratulations to our very own Mohamed Yateh upon the successful completion of your PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering.

Dr Yateh has also published several papers on climate change, water treatment and carbon emissions. He currently leads our forestry research team and provides technical guidance for forest conservation, biodiversity monitoring, and ecosystem restoration initiatives.

Restoration in Action!

Last week, we hosted an inspiring GLF Africa 2026 Watch Party. We were joined by representatives from the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of the Environment, Community Leaders, Farmers, and Youth Representatives. Together, we dove deep into the theme "Stewarding Our Rangelands," discussing restoration and peaceful coexistence within our local ecosystems.

Last week, the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) arrested 20 people involved in illegal gold mining in the southern part of the Kambui Forest Reserve near Kotomahun. The suspects were taken to the police station in Kenema and will be charged to court.

Following the arrests, we worked with NPAA to engage local communities about the environmental and social impacts of illegal mining in the park. These conversations are essential to building local awareness and encouraging collective responsibility for protecting the forest.

We will continue monitoring this area to deter further encroachment. This year, we also plan to restore the most affected areas by planting 3,000 native tree seedlings.

We recently welcomed two botanists from the UK, Maarten and James for a hiking trip in Kotomahun. It was amazing to have them identify some rare and beautiful plant species, but also bear witness to some of the challenges that we still have in preserving our forests.

Last week, we participated in the National Sensitisation and Engagement Meeting for members of the National Network of Civil Society Organisations on the REDD+ process, organised by the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to review progress achieved during the country’s REDD+ readiness phase and to discuss priorities and strategic actions for the way forward.

This is Maina Bafawahun village, a small little community across the Moa river. The community is made up of nearly one thousand inhabitants.

However, this is one of the poorest communities in Sierra Leone. They are crying for help to complete the building of their primary school. Please have a listen and we will appreciate it.
