Last week, we continued our restoration work in Nekabo by planting 2,214 native trees.

The village currently has no community forest of its own: The few existing forest patches belong to individual households. To change this, the community is establishing a shared forest on the grounds of the public school.

This initiative aims to restore the landscape, and bring back forest on a previous forested area.

This weekend, we kicked off our Landscape Restoration Work in Bafawahun, one of four communities working with us to restore over 10 hectares of degraded forest land.

Together, we’ll grow 10,000 trees to bring life back to areas once lost to deforestation. With strong community bylaws and an MoU in place, these trees will be protected for generations to come. Thanks to Global Landscapes Forum and CIFOR-ICRAF for making this possible 🙌🏾

Some highlights from last week’s sessions of the Environmental Journey Program: SLEM’s flagship environmental education initiative in schools.

Restoration efforts have begun in Bafawahun, where more than 500 trees were planted on the very first day. The site, once a thriving forest, was lost to deforestation but is now being brought back to life. For the past three years, we have been providing environmental education in this community, and together we are strengthening local bylaws to ensure that the trees planted today, and in the future will be protected for generations to come.

We didn’t add subtitles to the video since that came with an extra cost, but here’s the translation of what she says:

“My name is Gbessay, and I am the chairlady of Manina Bafawahun. Today, we are planting trees from our community nursery to restore this land, which was once covered by forest but has been completely cleared due to deforestation. You can see that you cannot see any big standing tree in this area.

I want to thank Sierra Leone Environment Matters for involving our community in this program. We are proud to welcome them here, and together we have worked hand in hand to make this restoration possible.

I also want to encourage other communities to follow our example in Bafawahun and take part in programs like this. And most importantly, I urge everyone: please do not cut down trees. But if you must, for any reason, make sure you plant another one in return.”

We were deeply honoured to be invited by the Alliance for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities for Conservation in Africa (AICA), alongside many other NGOs from West, Southern, and Central Africa.

Yesterday’s gathering brought together Indigenous Peoples and Local Community (IPLC) leaders, community representatives, government officials, and conservation partners from across the region to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and shape strategies for sustainable conservation.

A special thanks to our National Coordinator, Maryam Kwajaffa, for representing us with such dedication.

Training for the final batch of teachers and volunteers is done and dusted.

Sierra Leone Environment Matter (SLEM), with funding support from CIFOR-ICRAF (Centre for International Forestry Research), has completed a comprehensive training program for school teachers and SLEM volunteers from Kenema and surrounding rural communities.

The training equips participants to deliver SLEM’s hands-on environmental education program across all school levels in Kenema District, fostering awareness and active engagement in environmental conservation among students.
