Safe Water Initiative Sierra Leone, is a community based organization.
The purpose of this organization is to provide Safe drinking water, hygiene and Sanitation in the remote villages in Kailahun District.
During the 11 years of war in Sierra Leone, many safe drinking water facilities were destroyed. In addition to the war, Sierra Leone also experienced the Ebola outbreak that affected many communities, more especially Kailahun District.
There are still many villages in Kailahun District that do not have safe drinking water. The people drink water from running streams and unprotected boreholes.
In the rainy season, the run off water carries human f***s, animal dung, and debris into the streams or the unprotected boreholes. There is also the growth of bacteria and fungi into those streams or the local boreholes that make the water unfit for human health.
For this reason, many people in those villages especially the children regularly get sick of these water bone diseases like dysentery, Schistosomiasis and many others. Some of those water sources are located far away from the villages, women and children travel from long distances to fetch water from those sources, thereby endangering their lives. Some of the children go to school late after fetching water from a very long distance, this increase late coming and sometimes irregularities in school.
Again when the children are infected with those water bone diseases, they make them stay away from school to seek treatment. Those water bone diseases also cause serious illnesses leading to manutrition and sometimes death in children and even adults.
Because of the above problems and some others, the safe water Initiative has taken up the responsibility of visiting those villages and helping them find temporary and Permanent safe Water solutions together with hygiene and sanitation practices.
We have constructed three hand dug wells(pumps), in Loma, Bubengu and Tondofolu villages in Kailahun District with First Things Foundation Sierra Leone.
More than 300 villages have contacted us to provide these facilities for them. We are looking for funds to provide these facilities in those villages.
