Each year, millions of girls and women around the world are at risk of undergoing FGM, a harmful practice that intentionally alters or causes injury to the female ge***al organs for non-medical reasons. While the customs and traditions that perpetuate FGM vary from community to community, the procedure is generally carried out sometime between infancy and age 15, and it has serious socio-economic, physical, emotional, sexual and health consequences, including death. For this reason Christian Extension Services joined the Koinadugu women’s network ,the ministry of gender affairs in the international Zero tolerance campaign for FGM practices in Sierra Leone.

On Tuesday, the 14th of January 2025, the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs, with support from Christian Extension Services-Koinadugu District, facilitated one day of training on GBV prevention and response for stakeholders in Gbentu, Folosaba Kamba Chiefdom, Falaba District.

The training capacitated stakeholders, including widows, on rights, laws, and policies on GBV prevention, reporting, and response strategies through referrals for survivors of gender-based violence.

Considering the level of vulnerability in Gbentu, a community-based structure was established that will be directly working with authorities in terms of reporting gender-based violence cases

This is an ongoing effort to strengthen the relationship among partners, the Ministry, and Community Stakeholders in providing effective responses to issues related to Gender-based violence.

In another development, the Ministry wishes to inform you that the first partners coordination meeting for 2025 will be held on Tuesday, the 28th of January, 2025. The venue and time will be communicated in due course.
