🌍♻️ Students Taking Action for the Environment!

As part of our World Environment Day celebration, the Nature Club of Kabala Secondary School, under the leadership of The Green Earth Generation, successfully recycled 25 discarded tyres and transformed them into planting pots for 25 cashew seedlings.

With generous support from Sierra Leone Land Alliance, this initiative showcased how waste can be converted into a valuable resource while promoting environmental sustainability. By repurposing used tyres that could otherwise contribute to air, water, and land pollution, our students actively demonstrated the principles of responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.

Beyond recycling, the planting of 25 cashew seedlings contributes to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. Most importantly, the activity provided students with hands-on experience in environmental action, empowering them to become champions for a greener and more sustainable future.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Sierra Leone Land Alliance for making this initiative possible and to all Nature Club members whose enthusiasm and commitment brought the project to life.

Together, we are proving that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are environmental leaders today.

It all started in March (the hottest time of the year in Sierra Leone).
The sun was unforgiving, the soil was dry, and growing crops felt almost impossible.

But we refused to accept that.

Through our Nature Club, we decided to challenge the status quo. Instead of waiting for the rains, we got to work. We collected discarded plastic bottles, filled them with water, and designed a simple drip irrigation system connected to a 200-litre tank running through our garden beds.

It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t easy. But it worked.

Day by day, drop by drop, life returned to the soil. Seeds we planted began to push through the heat, maize, okra, and even krain krain (Corchorus olitorius), a beloved vegetable in our local dishes.

Today, this is what resilience looks like.
What started as an idea in the harshest conditions has become a thriving garden — proof that innovation, teamwork, and determination can overcome even the toughest climate challenges.

We didn’t just grow crops.
We grew hope.
