Today, Plan International Sierra Leone (PISL) joined the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), (IWW), , , , and other partners for a strategic review of the Pikin Tab Programme.

Thee meeting reflected on progress, successes and implementation challenges, while looking ahead to sustainability, government ownership and scale-up.With an ambition to reach approximately 4,000 schools by 2030, the programme represents an important step towards bringing technology enabled learning closer to children, starting from the primary level.

MBSSE leadership reaffirmed that digital learning is central to the future of education, while Imagine Worldwide reiterated its commitment to supporting a pathway towards sustainable government ownership and national scale.

Representing Plan International Sierra Leone, the Head of Programmes and Quality Development, Peter Koroma, alongside the Project Manager, Yankuba Forbie, highlighted the value of digital learning for children and communities and its alignment with Plan’s strategic priorities.

The discussions also underscored the importance of stronger teacher capacity, community ownership, monitoring, technical support and coordination to ensure that the benefits of the PikinTab Project are sustained.

The meeting further agreed on pursuing an Official National Launch of the Pikin Tab Programme and strengthening collaboration with district education offices, School Quality Assurance Officers and community leadership structures.

A New Chapter Begins: As 14,960 Children set to benefit from Early Childhood Learning:

Early Childhood Learning is critical to children's foundational learning, especially for ages 3-5. It is against this backdrop that the Salone Pikin 4 Play En Learn Outcomes Programme Funds project was officially launched in Kailahun District, with a well-attended District Inception Meeting bringing together government officials, community leaders, implementing partners, and other key stakeholders.

Implemented by Plan International Sierra Leone, the four-year EOF Project is focused on strengthening early childhood learning outcomes in targeted communities across the district. The project is made possible through the generous support of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Lego Foundation, the Embassy of Denmark, and Bridges Outcomes Partnership.

The District Inception Meeting served as the project's official launch, providing a strategic platform to introduce the initiative, align expectations among stakeholders, and set the tone for the collaborative spirit that will define implementation over the next four years. At its heart was a shared recognition that lasting development outcomes are rarely achieved in isolation.
Engaging partners enabled open dialogue on roles and responsibilities regarding project implementation and laid a solid foundation for coordinated action. With early childhood development recognized globally as a foundational determinant of lifelong learning, the project's focus reflects a deliberate investment in Sierra Leone’s youngest learners, one that stakeholders agreed would require sustained, joint effort over the coming years.
In accepting the project, Paramount Chief Musa Ngombukula Kallon 11 emphasized that “Children are at the heart of everything we do. As a result, we are delighted to receive the EOF Project and commit to providing the necessary support to ensure that its aims and objectives are fully realized and achieved.”
With the inception phase now underway, attention turns to translating the shared vision into concrete action. Over the next four years, Plan International Sierra Leone will work closely with the Government of Sierra Leone, communities, and District stakeholders by strengthening coordination and partnerships as implementation progresses, with continued support from FCDO, the Leone Foundation, the Embassy of Denmark, and Bridges Outcomes Partnership.
With the Salone Pikin 4Play En Learn Outcomes Programme Funds Plan, International will reach 14,960 kids between the ages 3-5 across 44 hard-to-reach communities in four districts, namely Kailahun, Kono, Tonkolili, and Falaba.

Safeguarding Training of Trainers for EOF Project Staff in Kailahun.

A two days Training of Trainers (ToT) session on Safeguarding officially ends in Kailahun. The training brought together staff of the EOF Project for an intensive capacity-building exercise aimed at strengthening safeguarding practices across the organization's areas of operation.

The training was designed to equip participants with the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to identify, prevent, and respond to safeguarding concerns in line with best practices and organizational policy. Beyond building individual competence, the session places strong emphasis on cascading this knowledge to wider teams and communities.

Upon completion of the ToT, participating EOF project staff will serve as designated Safeguarding Focal Points within their respective districts. In this capacity, they will be responsible for rolling out safeguarding training to colleagues and community stakeholders, as well as serving as the first point of contact for safeguarding-related matters at the district level.

This initiative underscores the organization's continued commitment to fostering safe, respectful, and accountable programming environments for all beneficiaries and staff involved in the EOF Project.

Fruits of Opportunity -From Greenhouse to Market: Mano Dasse's Harvest.

In Mano Dasse, there is a new sense of optimism among young people in Mano Dasse as they celebrate the first harvest from the Mano Greenhouse, turning months of learning, hard work and cultivation into a tangible agricultural enterprise.

The first harvest of habanero pepper has produced an initial 30 kilograms, with the produce currently valued at SLE 200 per kilogram. While modest in volume, the harvest marks a significant milestone for the young farmers and demonstrates the potential of greenhouse farming to create sustainable livelihood and income-generating opportunities for young people.

For the youth involved, the greenhouse is more than a farming structure. It is becoming a practical learning space where they are acquiring skills in modern agricultural production, crop management, harvesting and market engagement skills that can support them to build viable livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.

The first harvest also provides an important opportunity to connect agricultural production with markets. By moving from production to the sale of their produce, the young farmers are beginning to experience the complete value chain from cultivation and harvesting to pricing and market access.

At SLE 200 per kilogram, the 30-kilogram first harvest represents an initial market value of SLE 6,000. More importantly, it provides the young farmers with an early indication of what is possible when agricultural production is linked to practical skills, access to productive assets and market opportunities.

The achievement comes at a time when Plan International Sierra Leone is creating meaningful economic opportunities for young people remains critical to building resilient communities.

Creating Better Learning Environments for Children in Moyamba:

Through our Education SPAD fund, the Moyamba Programme provided 200 twin bench desks to five needs prioritised primary schools in sponsorship communities across Fakunya and Dasse Chiefdoms in Moyamba District.

The intervention is aimed at addressing critical furniture shortages while creating safer, more inclusive and child-friendly learning environments where children can participate meaningfully in classroom activities. Each twin bench-desk accommodates up to four pupils, directly contributing to improved classroom seating and learning conditions.

The five beneficiary schools were selected following a needs assessment conducted across 61 schools, ensuring that the support was directed to communities with the most pressing furniture needs.

For pupils, the intervention represents more than the provision of classroom furniture. Pupil representatives shared how inadequate seating had affected their learning experience, with some pupils reportedly having to compete for available spaces in classrooms. They expressed optimism that the new furniture would make classrooms more conducive to learning and encourage pupils to arrive at school on time.

Representing the District Directorate of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Mr Charles Fofanah commended Plan International for complementing Government's efforts to improve the quality of learning environments for children.

The intervention reflects PISL's community-centred approach to sponsorship, where investments made to improve the wellbeing of sponsored children are designed to generate wider benefits for their families, schools and communities.

Building Capacity for Adolescent Health: CAHLS Foundation Training:

Moyamba District, Sierra Leone — A four-day foundation training for School and Community Leads ended under the Just and Equal Communities , with a focus on strengthening community and school-based approaches to Child and Adolescent Health and Life Skills (CAHLS).

The training was designed to equip School and Community Leads with the knowledge, practical skills and tools required to effectively support the rollout of CAHLS activities at both school and community levels.

A key component of the training is preparing participants to establish and facilitate in-school and out-of-school CAHLS groups, while supporting the delivery of structured bi-weekly CAHLS sessions that provide children and adolescents with relevant knowledge and life skills.

With technical support from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), participants are actively engaging in interactive learning sessions, group discussions and practical exercises aimed at translating the training into effective action within their respective schools and communities.

The capacity-building initiative underscores the importance of investing in frontline actors who are positioned to create safe, supportive and inclusive spaces where children and adolescents can access information, develop essential life skills and make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Through the Just and Equal Communities initiative, Plan International and its partners continue to strengthen community-led approaches that advance the rights, health and wellbeing of children and adolescents while contributing to broader efforts to prevent gender-based violence and promote equality.

Empowering Teachers, Strengthening Safe Schools: Spotlight Project Trains 200 Teacher Mentors in Moyamba

What does it take to make a school a safer place for every child? It starts with teachers who are equipped to protect, guide and empower: So it was with this back drop that we engaged in building the capacity of 200 Teachers and Mentors from 100 schools through the Project across 14 Chiefdoms in Moyamba District.

The focus of the training is to build their capacity to prevent and respond to risks affecting children in and around schools. Key areas of focus include the Teachers’ Code of Conduct, Life Skills, prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in and around schools (SRGBV), reporting and referral mechanisms, and the monitoring and mentorship of school clubs.

In deepening our collaboration with Government the training was facilitated by technical staff from the MinistryofBasicandSeniorSecondaryEducation (MBSSE) and the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).

By strengthening the knowledge and skills of Teacher Mentors, the Spotlight Project is helping schools build stronger prevention, reporting and support systems, while creating spaces where children can learn, participate and thrive free from violence and abuse.
