The United Nations Association of Sierra Leone ( ) and the World Federation of United Nations Associations ( ) are closely connected but serve different roles.

United Nations Associations ( )

United Nations Associations are independent, non-governmental, non-profit organizations established within individual countries to promote the purposes and principles of the United Nations. They work to:

* Promote peace, human rights, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
* Raise public awareness about the UN and its work.
* Encourage citizens, especially young people, to engage with global issues.
* Support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
* Organize educational programs, conferences, Model UNs, advocacy campaigns, and community initiatives.

Examples include:

* United Nations Association of Sierra Leone (UNASIL)
* United Nations Association of Nigeria
* United Nations Association of the USA

World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA)

The World Federation of United Nations Associations is the global umbrella organization representing United Nations Associations worldwide. Founded in 1946, WFUNA brings together UNAs from more than 100 countries.

Its mission is to:
* Strengthen and support national UNAs.
* Advocate for a stronger, more effective United Nations.
* Promote multilateralism and international cooperation.
* Facilitate collaboration among UNAs across regions.
* Engage youth, civil society, governments, and the private sector in advancing the UN Charter and the SDGs.

WFUNA also organizes:
* Plenary Assemblies
* International conferences and policy dialogues
* Youth leadership and capacity-building programmes
* Global advocacy campaigns
* Partnerships with UN agencies and other international organizations

Relationship Between UNAs and WFUNA
* National UNAs operate independently within their respective countries.
* Eligible UNAs may become members of WFUNA, enabling them to participate in global governance, networking, and collaborative initiatives.
* WFUNA provides a platform for national associations to exchange best practices and coordinate international advocacy.

For organizations such as the United Nations Association of Sierra Leone and the United Nations Youth Association of Sierra Leone ( ), engagement with WFUNA can provide opportunities for international collaboration, leadership development, and participation in global forums dedicated to advancing the values and objectives of the United Nations.

The relationship between the United Nations Youth Associations ( ) and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is based on a shared commitment to advancing the ideals and values of the United Nations.

Here’s how they are connected:
* WFUNA is the global umbrella organization for national United Nations Associations (UNAs). It brings together UNAs from countries around the world to promote the UN Charter, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), peace, human rights, and international cooperation.

* United Nations Youth Associations (UNYAs) are youth-led or youth-focused organizations that typically operate as the youth wings or affiliated youth bodies of national UNAs. Their role is to engage young people in UN-related education, advocacy, leadership, and community action.

* While WFUNA’s primary members are national UNAs, many youth associations participate in WFUNA activities through their national UNA or collaborate with WFUNA on youth engagement initiatives, global forums, Model United Nations conferences, climate action, and the implementation of the SDGs.

* Youth participation is a key priority for WFUNA, which supports the meaningful inclusion of young people in decision-making, leadership development, and international dialogue through its various programmes and partnerships.

For organizations such as the United Nations Youth Association of Sierra Leone (UNYASIL), engagement with WFUNA is generally strengthened through collaboration with the United Nations Association of Sierra Leone (UNASIL) and by participating in regional and global WFUNA initiatives where opportunities are available.

In summary:

* WFUNA → Global federation of national United Nations Associations.
* UNAs → National organizations that are members of WFUNA.
* UNYAs → Youth organizations or youth wings that promote UN values and often work in partnership with their national UNA, contributing to WFUNA’s global youth engagement efforts.
