We at the Pan African Network We at the Pan African Network for the Conservation of Africa's Natural Resources(PANCANR) salute CEFCON under the able leadership of its Executive Director, Haja Kadi Sesay for leading the crusade against deforestation and biodiversity loss in Sierra Leone. We join the international community in commemorating the World Environment Day, and we collectively renew our resolve to work together in ensuring that environmental conservation remains as an integral part of Africa's reform agenda.

*"On this World Environment Day, we must shift from environmental conversation to urgent, localized climate action to safeguard Sierra Leone’s remaining forest cover and biodiversity."*

Fellow Sierra Leoneans, partners, and global custodians of our planet, as CEFCON Sierra Leone joins the global community to commemorate World Environment Day 2026, we do so under the critical global banner: *"Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."*

Here at home, alligned with the Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone, our immediate focus is clear and uncompromising: *Climate Action.*

For Sierra Leone, climate change is not a distant threat, it is an ongoing reality. From erratic weather patterns affecting our farmers to the severe coastal erosion threatening our communities, the impacts are real. Our rich ecosystems, from the Western Area Peninsula Forest to the Gola Rainforest Landscape, are our greatest defenses against climate chaos. Yet, rampant deforestation and unsustainable land use continue to put our future at risk.

As the Executive Director of CEFCON Sierra Leone, I am calling on all stakeholders; from development partners, government ministries and municipal councils to local communities and our vibrant youth to step up. We cannot solve ecological degradation in conference rooms alone; we must solve it on the ground through:

1. Aggressive reforestation and forest monitoring.
2. ⁠Strict enforcement of laws protecting our wetlands and marine ecosystems.
3. ⁠Youth-led environmental literacy to empower the next generation of conservationists.

Let us use this week of commemoration to move from words to measurable impact. I encourage everyone to Choose Sustainability over Convenience, support sustainable forestry, and protect the natural inheritance of our beautiful country.

Nature is not optional. It is the cornerstone of our survival. Let us plant the seeds of resilience today for a greener, safer, and more secure Sierra Leone tomorrow.

*The theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution,"* is a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address a crisis that impacts every corner of our planet and every life on it. We must act with urgency and determination to create a cleaner and healthier future for generations to come.
*Plastic pollution* is a pervasive problem, infiltrating our ecosystems, harming wildlife, and even entering our food chains.
*" To Beat Plastic Pollution,* it's a mandate to reduce plastic waste, encourage sustainable practices, and demand systemic change.
CEFCON Sierra Leone is committed to supporting individuals, communities, and governments in their efforts to combat plastic pollution. This includes raising awareness and advocating for full implementation of environmental policies
We believe that a united effort, involving individuals, organizations and governments, is essential to overcome this challenge.
By working together, we can create a world where plastic pollution is a thing of the past and where our planet thrives.
