CARL-SL Concludes Training for Commercial Bike Riders on Bail Regulations
Today, 29th October 2025, the Centre for Accountability and the Rule of Law (CARL-SL) successfully concluded a one-day training session for commercial bike riders on Sierra Leone’s bail regulations.
The event, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was held at the Bike Riders Union Building in Upgun, Western Urban District.
The training brought together executives and other key members of the Bike Riders Union to enhance their understanding of the country’s bail process and their legal rights when interacting with law enforcement officers.
In his opening remarks, Jeremy Ben Simbo, Acting Executive Director of CARL-SL, underscored the importance of legal awareness across all sectors of society.
“Knowledge of the bail process empowers riders to better engage with law enforcement and strengthens the justice system as a whole,” he stated.
Facilitator Mary Magdalene Kelfalla guided participants through key provisions of Sierra Leone’s Bail Regulation, emphasizing fair procedures and citizens’ rights during arrest as essential components of upholding justice.
Participants welcomed the initiative, describing it as highly relevant.
A participant, Foday Sesay, noted that the knowledge gained would help reduce unnecessary detentions and promote better understanding between riders and the police.
The training concluded with a lively discussion, during which participants shared personal experiences and proposed practical strategies to strengthen collaboration between the Bike Riders Union and justice sector institutions.
Similar trainings will be conducted in four other districts—Western Rural, Bo, Bombali, and Kenema—as part of ongoing efforts to empower youth bike riders as sustainable agents of peace in Sierra Leone.
