FOCUS 1000 is a non-profit, national development agency in Sierra Leone that is committed to making the best investment in the most crucial time in a child’s life: the first 1000 days – the number of days from conception and pregnancy until the child reaches age two. During this period, the child is fragile and susceptible to many illnesses and environmental conditions – such as diarrheal diseases

, malaria, malnutrition, and lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation. FOCUS 1000 partners with the Government, UN Agencies, and other local and international organizations to promote simple, cost-effective and high impact interventions that can help build a solid foundation for children to survive, thrive and develop to become productive citizens.

Breastfeeding is more than nourishment — it is love, protection, bonding, and the foundation for a healthier future.

As part of the 300 Days of Activism, FOCUS 1000 continues to raise awareness on the importance of proper breastfeeding practices and positioning to ensure every child gets the best start in life.

Different breastfeeding positions help mothers feed comfortably while helping babies latch properly, grow healthy, and stay protected from illness. Every mother’s journey is unique, and finding the right position can make breastfeeding easier and more effective.

This is more than a meeting—it is a strategic platform for strengthening capacity, aligning approaches, and deepening collaboration across teams. Through shared learning, practical engagement, and the exchange of field experiences, staff are being equipped with the tools and insights needed to drive more effective, community-centered interventions.

Strengthening Communities, Saving Lives!

We’re proud to share that a three-day intensive training was successfully conducted in Pujehun District for Mother Support Groups (MSGs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs), with a strong focus on nutrition and community-based screening.

Facilitated by dedicated District Nutritionists from the DHMT, this training equipped participants with practical knowledge and hands-on skills to better identify, manage, and respond to nutrition-related challenges at the grassroots level.

By empowering our frontline workers, we are:
Enhancing early detection of malnutrition
Strengthening community response systems

Over the past week, facilitators under the Positive Parenting Education Program (PPEP) engaged communities across Mongo, Sulima, and Neya Chiefdoms through inception meetings introducing the Spotlight Initiative and clarifying community roles.

Through Gud Kombra and Happy Family, sessions promoted positive parenting, awareness, and active community participation.
