Office Update!!!

Distribution of School Learning Materials to 230 Beneficiaries in Blama, Small Bo Chiefdom.

Today, as we have done at the beginning of every school year for the past four years, we distributed school learning materials to the 230 beneficiaries of the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Initiative project in Blama—200 girls and 30 boys. The project is funded by Edmund Rice Development through their Locally Led Development pilot program in West Africa Area with co-funding support from CSTWF, Edmund Rice English Schools and CBert. The materials included daily and ceremonial uniforms, badges, berets, felt hats, exercise books, school bags, shoes, mathematical sets, pens and solar led study lights.

What an incredible day it was! The joy was unmistakable on the faces of both the children and their parents. For many families, these materials are far more than school supplies; they represent relief from a financial burden and, perhaps more importantly, an opportunity for their children to remain in school and pursue a better future. Present in the distribution today were the Chiefdom Speaker of Small Bo Chiefdom, Representatives from the Ministries of Gender and Children’s Affairs and Basic and Senior Secondary Education, religious leaders, youth leaders, steering committee members belonging to the project, school administrators, media representatives and several other distinguished individuals, who have come to celebrate their children and the project team.

But amid the joy, one conversation left a deep impression on me.

One of the beneficiaries (name withheld) for reasons of dignity and respect, who has been part of the project since 2022, looked at me and said:

“Brother Steven, I’m grateful to this project. Looking at the condition of my family, accessing education with all that I need in school would have been a distant dream. My parents just cannot afford this. My fear now is what becomes of me after my senior school? What will I be doing after high school because I know my parents cannot afford university education? I’m afraid of becoming a victim of early marriage or being unprepared for marriage. I’ll be 17 in October and will still be below 18 when I write my final high school exams next year in May. If I don’t have opportunities, it means I am going to remain in Blama for the rest of my life. I hope God makes a way for me.”

I listened to our beneficiary in silence. Her words brought tears to my eyes and left me deeply moved. In that moment, the distribution of school materials took on a much deeper meaning. We were celebrating the opportunity to keep 230 children in school, yet she reminded me that keeping a girl or a boy in school today is only part of the journey. We must also ask what happens when the project ends, when the examinations are over and when the support she depends on is no longer there.

Her story is a reminder that education is not simply about providing uniforms, books, shoes and other learning materials. It is about creating pathways to a future in which girls can exercise choices, pursue further education or meaningful livelihoods and avoid being forced into early marriage or a life determined by poverty.

Today was indeed a day of joy—but also a day of difficult questions. The beneficiary’s words continue to echo in my mind: “I hope God makes a way for me.”

May we have the courage and commitment to become part of the answer to that prayer.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Her Excellency!!!

Your Excellency, First Lady Fatima Maada Bio,

Thank you for giving Sierra Leone a powerful voice on the global stage and, most importantly, for uniting the world around a threat that continues to rob millions of girls, particularly in developing societies like ours of their dignity, childhood, education, choices and dreams.

Your advocacy today at the United Nations General Assembly for 27 November to be proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage is more than a call for a date on the international calendar. It is a call to the conscience of the world: that no girl should have her future decided for her through marriage before she is ready. By winning the hearts and attention of the UN General Assembly, you’re helping transform the struggle of vulnerable girls into a shared global responsibility.

This vision resonates deeply with our work through the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Initiative (AGEI) in Blama, Small Bo Chiefdom, where we work alongside communities to ensure that the 230 girls we support remain in school, understand their rights, build confidence, access mentorship and reproductive health information, and are empowered to make informed choices about their futures. The initiative is supported through the solidarity of Misean Cara, Edmund Rice Development (ERD), CBERT, CSTWF, Edmund Rice English Schools and Br. Ray Weston, whose collective commitment demonstrates what is possible when people across borders stand together for the dignity and potential of girls.

From Blama to the United Nations, the message is the same: a girl’s childhood is not a commodity, her education is not optional, and her future should never be negotiated away through child or forced marriage.

Your Excellency, thank you for carrying the voices and dreams of these girls to the highest international forum. May your advocacy inspire governments, communities, faith leaders, development partners and families to move from commitment to action, so that every girl can grow, learn, dream and determine her own future.

From Sierra Leone to the world, we stand with this call: 27 November should become a day when the world renews its promise to every girl—her childhood, her dignity, her education and her future.

With profound appreciation and solidarity.

International Youth Day 2026!!!

“Empowering Youth, Building a Peaceful Future”

As the world celebrates International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Empowering Youth, Building a Peaceful Future,” the Christian Brothers Development Office – West Africa Area (CBDO-WAA) joins young people, communities, civil society organisations, government institutions and development partners in recognising the important role of young people in shaping a more peaceful, inclusive and sustainable society.

Young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow. They are leaders, innovators, workers, entrepreneurs and peacebuilders today. When young people are given opportunities to acquire relevant skills, participate meaningfully in decision-making and contribute to the development of their communities, they become better equipped to address the challenges facing their generation and build peaceful societies.

For CBDO-WAA, youth empowerment is an important part of our development mission. We believe that sustainable development cannot be achieved without investing in the potential, creativity and resilience of young people. Our programmes therefore seek to create opportunities for young people to develop practical skills, access livelihoods, participate in community development and become agents of positive change.

Through the Work of Our Hands Project at the Senan Kerrigan Vocational Centre (SKVC) in Bo, CBDO provides young people with opportunities to acquire practical and market-oriented vocational skills in areas such as hairdressing, catering, tailoring and computer studies. The programme is designed to help young people develop skills that can improve their employability, support self-employment and enable them to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

Skills development is more than preparing young people for employment. It can also contribute to peacebuilding. A young person who has access to skills, livelihood opportunities and a sense of purpose is better positioned to participate constructively in society. Creating pathways for young people to earn a dignified livelihood can reduce vulnerability to exclusion, exploitation and other factors that may contribute to social instability.

Our Seeds of Change Project in Mabureh, Makeni, also demonstrates our commitment to creating opportunities for young people, particularly through agriculture and climate resilience. The project supports women and engages young people in climate-smart agriculture, agricultural skills development, food processing and improved livelihood opportunities. By equipping young people with knowledge and practical skills in sustainable agriculture, the project helps them see farming not simply as subsistence activity, but as a potential source of income, entrepreneurship and community transformation.

The involvement of young people in climate-smart agriculture is particularly important as communities increasingly experience the effects of climate change. Young people can become innovators and champions of sustainable agricultural practices, helping their communities adapt while creating opportunities for employment and income generation.

Beyond these specific projects, CBDO continues to participate in and support youth-driven development initiatives across Sierra Leone. Our approach recognises that young people should not only be viewed as beneficiaries of development programmes. They should also be given space to identify problems, propose solutions, lead initiatives and participate in decisions that affect their lives and communities.

On this International Youth Day, we therefore reaffirm our commitment to working alongside young people and supporting initiatives that promote skills development, entrepreneurship, education, human rights, climate action, social inclusion and peacebuilding.

We also recognise that empowering young people requires more than training. It requires creating an environment where they can access decent work, participate in civic life, express their ideas safely, and contribute to decisions at community and national levels. It requires government, civil society, faith-based organisations, development partners, communities and the private sector to work together to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

The theme “Empowering Youth, Building a Peaceful Future” is therefore a call to action. If we want peaceful and resilient communities, we must invest in young people today. If we want sustainable development, we must equip young people with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to become active contributors. And if we want a more inclusive society, young people must have a meaningful voice in shaping its future.

CBDO-WAA remains committed to walking with young people, creating opportunities for them to discover their potential and supporting them to become skilled, responsible, confident and active agents of change.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate young people not merely for the future they represent, but for the difference they are already making today.
