The GLRA in Sierra Leone
The GLRA German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief is giving sustainable assistance to sick and marginalized people in developing and emerging countries since 1966. Millions of sick people and outcasts in Africa, Asia, Central and South America have got medical treatment and social support through GLRA.
The GLRA’S intervention in Sierra Leone spans more than half a century when it started Leprosy treatment and Social Welfare work in the Northern District of Sierra Leone called Bombali in 1966.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the number of people with disabilities due to leprosy increased alarmingly. This is how the orthopedic shoe workshop came into being, using appropriate aids such as protective shoes and other things.
In 1973, the National Leprosy Control Program was developed and its implementation started. In 1983, the treatment provided by the WHO was converted to leprosy, and from then until 1990, the number of people suffering from leprosy could be reduced from over 15,000 to less than 2,000. At the beginning of the 1990s, tuberculosis was included in the treatment regimen and laboratory diagnostics was continuously established and improved.
