UPDATE FROM THE JUNIOR DOCTORS ASSOCIATION OF SIERRA LEONE (JUDASIL)
Progress Made and Outstanding Concerns
The Junior Doctors Association of Sierra Leone (JUDASIL) wishes to provide an update to its members and the general public regarding ongoing engagements with the relevant authorities on matters affecting junior doctors across the country.
In recent weeks, the Association, together with the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA), held a meeting with the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) to address several concerns relating to the welfare and administrative management of doctors within the public health system. During this engagement, a number of issues were discussed, including the salary deductions and disparities that have affected many junior doctors over the past several months. However, the Association is yet to receive a formal written statement from HRMO addressing these concerns.
Additionally, concerns remain regarding salary alignment and promotions across various cadres of doctors. It has been observed that a number of Registrars are still receiving Medical Officer salaries, while some Medical Officers continue to receive House Officer salaries despite having been promoted or having advanced in their professional roles. These discrepancies remain unresolved, and the Association continues to call for the appropriate alignment of salaries with the respective cadre and responsibilities of doctors.
On the matter of recruitment, the issue remains outstanding. Internationally trained Sierra Leonean doctors who have completed the required local rotations were recently invited for interviews by the Health Service Commission, which represents a step forward. However, there has not yet been further action regarding their formal absorption into the health system, and other qualified doctors who are yet to be recruited also remain in waiting.
With regard to benefits, the Association acknowledges that the fuel allocations for the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2025 have now been paid. However, some House Officers are yet to receive their fuel allocations (4th quarter).
While these engagements represent some level of progress, several critical concerns remain unresolved, including salary discrepancies across cadres, recruitment delays, and outstanding benefits. These issues, among others, are yet to be comprehensively addressed.
The Junior Doctors Association of Sierra Leone remains committed to constructive engagement and professional dialogue with the relevant authorities to ensure that these matters are resolved in a fair, transparent, and timely manner. The Association will continue to keep its members and the public informed as further developments arise.
Finally, the Association wishes to inform its members that SLMDA and JUDASIL will be holding a meeting on Monday, 16th March 2026, to discuss the way forward regarding the ongoing strike. Further updates will be communicated following that engagement.
