Report on One Stop Center’s Engagement for GBV Survivors
Date: 11th August 2025
Venue: One Stop Center Office, Koinadugu District

Today, the One Stop Center in Koinadugu District hosted a significant engagement that brought together various stakeholders, including the Center for Media and Women’s Empowerment, community leaders, government representatives, and partner organizations. The purpose of the meeting was to distribute livelihood support items to survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to help them rebuild their lives and sustain themselves financially.

The distributed items included palm oil, paste and brush, soap, and bales of clothes—selected to serve both as household necessities and potential income-generating resources for the beneficiaries.

In his keynote address, Mr. Silvanus Conteh, Program Coordinator of the One Stop Center, revealed that over 400 young girls in Koinadugu District have experienced GBV. He emphasized that this alarming number calls for sustained intervention and partnership. Mr. Conteh explained that the center, with support from partners such as UN Women and Irish Aid, has been working to secure practical assistance for survivors. However, due to funding constraints, this particular engagement was only able to support seven beneficiaries. He expressed hope that through continued advocacy and collaboration, more survivors will benefit in the future, and urged communities to prioritize prevention and support services.

Representing the Center for Media and Women’s Empowerment, the Manager delivered an uplifting speech, urging the beneficiaries to make the best use of the items received. She reminded them that the support given was an investment in their resilience and future economic stability. She encouraged them to consider selling palm oil or clothes as a way to start small businesses, which could sustain them and their families. She also stressed the importance of connecting with empowerment networks for mentorship, training, and ongoing support.

The program concluded on a heartfelt note when Mary, the mother of one of the beneficiaries, gave a thanksgiving message. She expressed profound gratitude to the One Stop Center and all supporting partners, noting that the assistance came at a crucial time in her daughter’s recovery. She prayed for blessings upon all contributors and called for continued help for other survivors in the district.

The event closed with renewed commitment from all stakeholders to keep advocating for the safety, rights, and empowerment of GBV survivors in Koinadugu District.

The Devastating Impact of Climate Change Hits Dwazark Farmers

The effects of climate change continue to wreak havoc across our country. In July, heavy rainfall severely impacted the Dwazark community, where local farmers saw their crops washed away—devastating their primary source of livelihood.

The Centre for Media and Women’s Empowerment (CMWE) remains steadfast in its advocacy for urgent climate action. We believe that protecting our environment and supporting affected communities is a collective responsibility.

Together, we must act—now more than ever—to safeguard our people and preserve our future.

Community Outreach on Climate Change at Kamasuduguna

Fadugu, Koinadugu District – Thursday, 3rd July 2025

Climate change remains a pressing concern in Sierra Leone, with erratic weather patterns, rising sea levels, erosion, and flooding threatening farms and the livelihoods of countless rural communities.

In response, the Centre for Media and Women’s Empowerment (CMWE), as part of its core thematic focus, held a community outreach session in Kamasuduguna Town, Fadugu, Koinadugu District. The engagement aimed to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change, while also exploring its often-overlooked link to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Women and girls, especially in rural areas, face heightened vulnerability due to the indirect consequences of environmental stress and resource scarcity.

Addressing the gathering, Sarah Israella Koroma, Programs Manager at CMWE, highlighted the disproportionate burden climate change places on women.
“Women in rural areas are the backbone of our food systems. When the environment suffers, they suffer twice as much — as caretakers and providers,” she said. “We must embrace environmentally sustainable practices and push for inclusive support to protect livelihoods and rights.”

The session also created space for community voices. Mrs. Kadiatu Marah, a local farmer, shared her firsthand struggles:

“The climate has changed drastically. We can’t predict the rains anymore, and our crops are suffering. We call on the government and development organisations to support us with farming tools and seeds,” she pleaded.

The outreach concluded with interactive discussions and a call for collaboration between local authorities, civil society, and development partners to build climate resilience — particularly for women and girls.
