Pikin Bizness-Gift of Life

Pikin Bizness-Gift of Life Pekin Bizness a Non-Governmental set up in 2001 with the purpose of helping vulnerable children born with congenital heart defects.

About Pikin Bizness-Gift of Life
Pikin Bizness works to support children by providing health related assistance, economic and educational support to the child survivors of the post conflict period in Sierra Leone. Pikin Bizness focuses its activities on children, who have the greatest capacity to transcend the conflict of their communities and to bring about change in the future. These children wi

thin the society offer the best hope for change and are increasingly amongst the most vulnerable in conflict situations. Pikin Bizness works and operates in Sierra Leone to create a safe environment where trained key workers can provide a climate of support and mentoring tailored to the needs of children and their environment. In January 2001, three people came together; Dr Adonis Abboud, Shellac Sonny Davies and Barbara Bangura, and launched a Charitable Organization called Pikin Bizness. The first three years, in collaboration with WFP, the US Embassy and UNAMSIL, with sponsorship from DStv S/L, a helicopter was flown country wide during the Christmas holiday on each of these years, distributing gifts ranging from sweet, drinks, radio sets, school bags, to educational materials etc., to children Karitas Makeni [A Catholic NGO], International Medical Corp, [IMC] and other NGOs helped in identifying the children. Four years later, in 2005, having spotted a campaign launched by the Exclusive Daily Newspaper, advertising and appealing for help of Abu Bakarr Jalloh, a six-year-old with a hole in his heart, Pikin Bizness embarked on a larger campaign targeting mainly children with heart deficiencies, especially children with holes in their hearts and other related diseases. After the campaign by exclusive, Pikin Bizness then embarked on a larger campaign in the country to raise fund in order to save the life of a young boy who was about to die. Because being born in Sierra Leone means that you have no chance of obtaining a heart operation let alone a simple non-intrusive sonogram test needed for detecting and diagnosing not only heart problem but birth defect in pregnant women and other health problems. In order to save this boy donation were made by some citizens and members of Pikin Bizness to facilitate the trip abroad for an open-heart surgery. Since November 2005 to date, six children have been flown to France for cardiac treatment which cost the organization more than ten (ten) thousand euros per child. Apart from heart cases the organization has helped other children suffering from other diseases. The organization does not only deal with children suffering from heart deficiencies it's also caters for children suffering from different diseases such as Hydrocephalus, liver, kidney, urinary leakage and a lot more diseases. Even though the organization is non-governmental it works in collaboration with both the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and that of Gender and Children's Affairs to help develop the health sector and protecting and promoting the right of children in the country. Pikin Bizness and the Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs have succeeded in reducing the number of street children living on the streets by giving them scholarship for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level. Some of these children were taken from the street and living a better life. With the help of this organization a number of six children's lives have been saved that were suffering from hole in the heart. Five children were flown from Freetown to France in order for them to have Open Heart surgery while one went to Germany where he was operated on. Also, young Francis who was suffering from hydrocephalus was flown to Kenya for treatment. In a most recent development Pikin Bizness sent baby Ngauja to Egypt as he was suffering from lower abdominal wall defect. He is back from Egypt and in great form. The aim of the organization is to provide Economic and social wellbeing for marginalized children and reduce the number of children living on the streets due to the effect of the civil conflict that the country experienced. By been here you have shown that you have a heart to reach out and give to children who may never get the chance to say 'Thank you' in person. On their behalf we would like to say, 'Thank you'...

Sierra Leone’s Top Graduates Share Their Inspiring Journeys

By [email protected]
Celebrating academic brilliance, eleven of Sierra Leone’s brightest young minds were recognized for their achievements, marking a new chapter in their inspiring journeys.

These individuals, representing various fields of study, not only excelled in academics but also overcame personal and societal challenges to emerge as the best among their peers.

For Alhassan Barrie, who excelled medicine at the College of Medical Studies and Allied Sciences (CHOMAS), success was a result of meticulous planning and perseverance. Despite the demanding nature of his studies, Alhassan credits his achievements to his supportive family and consistent time management. He reflected, “I learned early on to prioritize my goals and balance academics with extracurricular activities.” His advice to younger students is straightforward: “Stay focused, manage your time, and don’t let distractions derail your purpose.”

Similarly, Finnah Roselyn Tarawallie defied societal expectations with a stellar GPA of 4.89. Coming from a challenging background, she saw education as a tool to rewrite her story. “I was determined to prove that excellence is possible no matter where you start,” she said. Finnah emphasized that her success was the result of daily discipline, a strong mindset, and belief in the power of hard work. She now hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their ambitions with confidence and focus.

Meanwhile, Vandi Foday Alpha’s academic journey was driven by the influence of his friends, whose healthy competition kept him motivated. With a GPA of 3.79, he reflected on the role his peers played in pushing him to perform better. “The competition among us was fierce but encouraging,” he shared. Vandi’s dedication to regular preparation and creating personal notes helped him rise above challenges, showcasing the value of teamwork and consistent effort.

For Hassanatu Yeanie Kanu, the road to success was deeply personal. Her passion for medicine was sparked in grade six after losing a friend to a preventable heart condition. Despite the sleepless nights and sacrifices, she remained steadfast in her mission. “Hard work, prayer, and the fear of failing were my driving forces,” she said. Now, she is determined to make a difference in Sierra Leone’s healthcare system, believing that success is about resilience and overcoming life’s hurdles.

The theme of breaking barriers resonates strongly with Siafiatu Hafasatu Kamara, who emerged as the top female graduate from the Institute of Public Administration and Management with a GPA of 3.8 in banking and finance. Being the first in her family to attend university, she felt a deep responsibility to set a positive example. “I couldn’t afford to fail—not for myself, not for my family,” she said. Her story emphasizes the power of determination, faith, and effective time management in achieving success.

Jusu Gandi, on the other hand, demonstrated that success is not only personal but also communal. A graduate in public sector management with a GPA of 7.5, Jusu became known for his selfless dedication to mentoring fellow students. He explained, “Helping others kept me grounded and focused on my goals.” His story highlights the importance of discipline and the role of uplifting others along the way.

These remarkable achievements were celebrated under the auspices of the Adonis Abboud Trust Fund (AATF), which has become a cornerstone of academic recognition in Sierra Leone. Daphne Bangura, the Project Coordinator of AATF, shared the organization’s vision and history. “The AATF was established to celebrate and reward excellence while encouraging young people to strive for greatness,” she explained. This year’s awards, which included trophies and cash prizes, serve as a powerful motivation for all students across the country.

By recognizing Sierra Leone’s best and brightest, the AATF continues to inspire a generation of leaders who are poised to transform their communities and the nation at large.
