Women in Mining Africa WiM-Africa Moreover, we aspire to create a world where children are removed from hazardous mine sites, safeguarding their rights and well-being.

Women in Mining Africa (WIM-Africa) is a Pan-African organization committed to enhancing the arduous working conditions experienced by women artisanal miners in rural African communities. At WIM-Africa, we envision a future where women in the mining sector across Africa stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, empowered, respected, and thriving. Our vision is of a mining industry t

hat reflects the diversity and inclusivity of society, where women play a central role in driving innovation, sustainability, and equitable growth. We also envision a world where every woman miner has access to the resources, opportunities, and support she needs to succeed, regardless of her background or circumstances. In our vision, gender equality is not merely an aspiration but a lived reality, ingrained in the fabric of the mining sector.

The Work Begins: Pleased to have convened our UN ARFSD-12 side event on the Africa Responsible Minerals & Gender Index (ARMGI) — positioning a practical accountability framework for responsible , gender inclusion and host outcomes.

The discussion reinforced a simple point:
🌍 Africa does not only need more commitments.
🌍 Africa needs tools that help measure whether are translating into outcomes.
🌍 ARMGI is envisioned as part of that solution.

The conversation now moves beyond the event toward:
• Building an ARMGI technical coalition
• Identifying pilot partnerships and countries
• Developing indicator architecture and implementation pathways
• Supporting , UN and partner institutions with a practical accountability instrument

This is not an endpoint.
It is the beginning of a longer institutional journey.
We welcome , partners, companies, and civil society partners interested in helping shape the next phase.

From an index to accountability.

👉🏾 How can accountability frameworks strengthen protection, inclusion and equitable outcomes for women and vulnerable groups in mineral governance systems—and what role can ARMGI play?

30/04/2026

Gender. Safety. Accountability.

At the UN Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD-12), one message was clear:

Responsible minerals cannot exist without protection, and inclusion.

In this powerful intervention, Celeste Louw brought a critical perspective to the Africa Responsible Minerals & Gender Index (ARMGI) dialogue:

👉🏾 How can accountability frameworks strengthen protection, inclusion and equitable outcomes for women and vulnerable groups in mineral governance systems—and what role can ARMGI play?

Her message reinforces a key truth:
If are not safe, included and protected—there is no responsible mining.

As ARMGI moves from dialogue to implementation, voices like Celeste’s ensure that gender is not treated as an add-on, but as a core accountability pillar.

African Union Perspective on Critical Minerals and AfCFTA — ARFSD-12 Dialogue || At the United Nations Twelfth Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD-12), the African Union Commission voice on critical minerals and industrial transformation was clearly articulated.

Mr. Islam Swaleh, from the African Union - Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, Minerals (ETTIM), delivered a strong intervention emphasizing the importance of moving beyond extraction toward value addition, regional trade and industrialization—with particular reference to the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.

His contribution reinforced a critical point:
💥 Africa’s mineral future must not only be about supply to global markets—but about building integrated, accountable and inclusive value chains within the continent.
💥 As part of the Africa Responsible Minerals & Gender Index (ARMGI) dialogue, this perspective is central to shaping a framework that connects:
⛏️ mineral development
⛏️industrial transformation
⛏️gender inclusion
and measurable ⛏️ host community outcomes
⛏️💥 This is the direction.
From extraction → to value chains📌
From value chains → to accountability📌

From accountability → to inclusive development📌

We have developed and released the WiM-Africa Gold & Diamond Discovery Club Implementation Manual for children aged 8–13 years—a structured tool for schools, teachers, and volunteers to introduce young learners to the gold and diamond sector.

Africa’s mineral future must be built early—starting from the classroom.

If we want a different outcome in Africa’s mineral economy, we must start by shaping how the next generation understands it.
