After restoration what’s next?

🌿 Biodiversity Survey in Sierra Leone’s Mangrove Forests

To better understand and protect our mangrove ecosystems across Sierra Leone, we’re carry out detailed biodiversity surveys. Here’s how we do it:

Establish a 10x10 m plot and record GPS coordinates of all corners restored site.
• Conduct a mangrove inventory, measuring tree diameter and height.
• Document logged stumps to assess human impact and regeneration.
• Set up two 2x2 m subplots diagonally within the main plot.
• Record fauna: count , , , , and .
• Note burrows (large and small) and total mangrove roots.
• Observe , , and species around the site.
• These surveys reveal species–habitat relationships, enhance understanding of ecosystem dynamics, and provide critical data for , , and sustainable management in Sierra Leone.

Our mangroves are faced with massive deforestation due to rapid urbanization in Freetown and attractions to coastal development.

Celebrating International Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation Day.

As winners of the second round of the Youth Climate Action Fund, our collaboration with Africell Sierra Leone Ltd and technical support from (MDU Team) has support Nature for Mangroves team to plant and track 15,000 mangrove seedlings at cockle day community over the past two days, promoting sustainable mangroves ecosystem management and climate resilience.

This initiative has also provided a platform for women and youth to take on leadership roles in restoration and conservation of our endangered mangroves ecosystem.

Let us continue to work together to safeguard and restore our mangrove ecosystems, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
