Mangrove conservation starts with local communities.

As part of the Sierra Leone River estuary, kolleh town, Cockle bay in Freetown, Sierra Leone, young people, schools, community groups and local partners have planted together over 20,000 mangrove seedlings, while raising awareness of the vital role mangroves play in protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience

Behind every mangrove forest is a community that depends on it.

Along Freetown's coastline, oyster farming has sustained generations of women providing income, independence, and cultural identity. But as mangrove forests disappear under human pressure, so does the abundance they once harboured.

Oyster farmer Millicent Turay captures it simply: "In the past, the mangroves were full of oysters. There was no need to go into the water to get any. But today, when you look at the river, you can't see them anymore."

This is what ecological loss looks like at the human level. And it is exactly why mangrove restoration is not just an environmental priority, it is a women's rights and economic justice issue.

A huge milestone for Nature for Mangroves and the Kolleh Town Community!

From 26–29 March, our dedicated team spent three days on the ground clearing sites, planting, and tracking 10,000 mangrove propagules as part of our Climate Action Accelerator programme.

This is more than planting trees. Mangroves are among the most powerful carbon sinks on the planet, protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining the livelihoods of coastal communities.

A massive thank you to every team member, community partner, and supporter who made this possible. Together, we're turning climate commitments into climate action one propagule at a time.

Nature for Mangroves is proud to announce the implementation of the Mangrove Conservation through Sustainable Oyster Farming Project in Kolleh Town.

With the support from Plan International, the YCAA Grant, and other valued partners, this initiative strengthens community resilience, protects mangrove ecosystems, and promotes sustainable livelihoods access to slum communities in Freetown.

Summed up 2025 in one word “Restoration”

From planting 15,000 mangrove seedlings onwards, we restored coastal ecosystems, strengthened climate resilience, and nurtured a future rooted in sustainability. Through environmental education, we empowered communities with knowledge and stewardship, while supporting local livelihoods that grow in harmony with nature.

Together, we protect mangroves, sustain communities, and invest in a healthier planet for generations to come.
