Civil Peace Service in Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, the first Civil Peace Service Experts arrived in 2003, just shortly after a brutal civil war. By then, partners focussed on mitigating the effects of the war by supporting reintegration of ex-combatants and displaced people, especially children and youth. Coping with trauma through psychosocial counselling and reconciliation played a crucial role in our partners work. Today, CPS in Sierra Leone supports partners in their aim to achieve positive peace by: Strengthening the voices of women, girls and Youth to ensure their rights are respected through sensitization, education and advocacy. Working on conflicts between communities and investors through mediation, dialogue and advocacy and contribute to good governance and human rights in natural resources management. Promoting non-violent ways to solve conflicts through peace education, peace committees and Access to Justice advocacy. Building capacity in trauma work taking local context and mechanisms into account. Enhancing partners’ advocacy and media efforts through capacity building and networking.

CPS Sierra Leone is carried out by the Association for Development Cooperation (AGEH) and Bread for the World (BfW) in cooperation with partners including universities, church based and none governmental organisations. Once a year our Sierra Leone Peace Network celebrates International Peace Day and draws attention to burning issues regarding peace.

Background: The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a programme aimed at preventing violence and promoting peace in crisis zones and conflict regions. It aims to build a world in which conflicts are resolved without resorting to violence. Nine German peace and development organizations run the CPS together with local partners. CPS experts support people on the ground in their commitment for dialogue, human rights and peace on a long-term basis. Currently, approximately 300 international CPS experts are active in 43 countries. The program was established in 1999 and is funded by the German Government.
