This is another Maternal and Child Health Post that we have refurbished and handed over to the people of Rogballan Kassseh Community in Port Loko District.

In collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone and our partners, Save the Children has now refurbished and expanded eight health facilities across Pujehun and Port Loko Districts since last year—four in each district.

We believe that every child deserves a healthy start in life. This facility is part of the broader support we are providing to 62 health facilities across the two districts through training for healthcare workers, the provision of medical equipment, essential supplies, and other support needed to deliver quality healthcare services.

These investments are helping more children, mothers, and pregnant women access the care they need, when they need it most.

This work is made possible through the support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When we take care of nature, it takes care of us.

This morning, we joined the Environment Protection Agency’s Green Walk to commemorate World Environment Day and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment.

The walk marked World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, and served as a reminder that protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. Clean communities, healthy ecosystems, and a sustainable future depend on the choices we make today.

Together, let’s do our part to protect the environment so that it can continue to protect us.

One Small Change Can Make a Massive Difference in the Lives of Many

Makama community has had its own fair share of challenges in getting proper health services. The maternal and child health facility, which is over 20 years old, has deteriorated over time and cannot keep up with the needs of the people.

19 other communities rely on this facility for their health services. The facility struggled and was one of the most deplorable.

There was no reliable water, sanitation was poor, and staff worked in difficult conditions. Mothers and children, who depend on timely care the most, were at risk.

That story changed yesterday. Together with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, and other partners, Save the Children handed over the rehabilitated and expanded facility to the community. The facility is now equipped with the necessary medical equipment for its operations.

One of the most important changes is access to clean water. “Before now, people walked five to ten miles just to fetch water for the facility,” Sulaman, the in-charge, said.

A new well, pump, and water system now supply clean water to the wards, toilets, and staff quarters. Health workers can now wash their hands, clean equipment, and provide safe care without delay.

Sanitation has also improved. For a health centre that serves many communities, this means dignity, safety, and better infection prevention.

A solar system to power the facility was installed, and a proper waste management zone has also been constructed. Medical waste can now be disposed of safely, protecting both the community and the environment.

All this was made possible through funding from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through our Strengthening Health Systems project.

When disasters happen, children face greater risks such as displacement, disruption to education, malnutrition, and exploitation.

Some disasters that affect the environment can be prevented if we take proper care of our surroundings and plan well for those we cannot prevent.

With this in mind, we have been working with the National Disaster Management Agency - Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency, as well as health workers, chiefs, and children, to develop an emergency preparedness plan for Pujehun and Western Area Urban.

Last week, we met again in Freetown to review the document and ensure that all contributions from stakeholders, especially children, are clearly and accurately included.

A plan like this will greatly improve response efforts, reduce humanitarian impacts, and support early recovery as well as long term resilience.

Good News of the Week!

Save the Children has handed over fully rehabilitated and fully equipped maternal health facilities to two communities in Pujehun District (Salina Samba and Messibu). This brings the number of refurbished facilities to four since last year.

These facilities, like many rural health centres, previously struggled with poor infrastructure, lack of clean water, and unreliable electricity. These upgrades have now changed that.

The facilities have been expanded, water systems have been installed, sanitation has been improved, waste management zones have been constructed, and solar power systems have been added to provide reliable electricity throughout the day. Accommodation for health service providers has also been upgraded.

These improvements will lead to safer deliveries, better care for mothers and newborns, and stronger infection prevention for people living in these communities and nearby areas.

Next stop is Port Loko. On Wednesday, we will also hand over two rehabilitated and fully equipped maternal and child health posts to two communities in Port Loko. This will bring the total number of rehabilitated facilities across both districts to eight.

All of this has been made possible with funding from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The handover ceremony in Pujehun was attended by the donor representative, Mr Walters, senior Ministry of Health officials including the Director of Primary Health Care, the Child Health Manager, the Quality of Care Manager, and the District Medical Officer. Also in attendance were the Council Chairman, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, SLANGO, and other key stakeholders.

Together for a

Every girl deserves the knowledge, dignity, and support needed to manage menstruation safely and confidently without shame, stigma, or barriers to education and participation.

We should all continue to support girls and young people with menstrual health education, awareness raising, and safe spaces.

By equipping girls with the right information and support, we are helping them stay healthy, confident, and empowered to achieve their full potential.

Our cybersecurity and online safety training for our teams is still ongoing.

In our work, keeping information safe is very important. It helps us protect the well-being, safety, and dignity of the people we serve, especially children. When our teams have the right knowledge and tools, they can avoid risks and respond better.

Last week, we held the training in Port Loko. The week before, we also did the same training for our teams in Moyamba and Bonthe District.

Next, we will train our teams in Kailahun and Pujehun so they can stay safe online and protect both themselves and the people they serve.

Imagine being denied access to health services because your medical needs do not match the personal beliefs of a health worker. This is the reality for some girls in Sierra Leone, especially in rural areas.

When health workers put their personal beliefs before their professional responsibilities, girls are forced to look for alternatives. These alternatives are sometimes dangerous or of poor quality, or they may go without care completely, putting their health and well-being at risk.

To address this, we are working with the Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health through the Foundation’s project to improve access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services in the country.

Over the past three days, from 12 to 14 May 2026, we trained the first group of 160 community health care providers from 39 communities in Kailahun on the Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation tool for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.

The VCAT tool helps health workers build self-awareness, empathy, and professionalism. It supports them to reflect on their beliefs and attitudes, and how these may affect the care they provide.

The training aimed to reduce bias among health workers towards adolescent girls and boys and to strengthen the delivery of respectful, youth-friendly, and inclusive health services.

Through role plays, case studies, group discussions, and reflection exercises, participants explored personal beliefs, social norms, and attitudes that can limit young people’s access to care.

This is an important step towards making sure that all adolescents in Sierra Leone can access respectful, non-judgmental, and rights-based health services. Training for the second group will take place next week in Kailahun.
