โ€œ101 Things You Wanted To Know About The Police But Were Too Afraid To Askโ€ โ€“ Question Development Workshop

The West African Youth Network (WAYN) in collaboration with its LEAP Consortium Partners โ€“ WANEP and Prison Watch, with support from DIGNITY, successfully held a two-day Question Development Workshop titled โ€œ101 Things You Wanted To Know About The Police But Were Too Afraid To Ask.โ€

The event brought together key stakeholders from Ministries, Security Institutions, Civil Society Organizations, Community Leaders, and Youth Groups to discuss and develop relevant questions that will form the foundation of an upcoming citizen-friendly booklet aimed at strengthening the relationship between the Sierra Leone Police and the public.

The workshop featured insightful presentations, group discussions, and plenary sessions, focusing on six thematic areas:
1๏ธโƒฃ Introduction to the Sierra Leone Police
2๏ธโƒฃ Rights and Duties of Police and Citizens
3๏ธโƒฃ Arrest and Detention
4๏ธโƒฃ Reporting Crimes
5๏ธโƒฃ Police Accountability
6๏ธโƒฃ Criminal Justice

Participants also engaged in an interactive Word Cafรฉ Session, sharing ideas, evaluating draft questions, and proposing next steps toward producing the final โ€œ101 Thingsโ€ publication.

The overall objective of this initiative is to enhance mutual understanding, accountability, and collaboration between the police and communities โ€” ultimately contributing to violence prevention and peacebuilding in Sierra Leone.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThis process is not just about questions; itโ€™s about creating a bridge of trust and transparency between citizens and those who protect them.

On October 2nd, 2025, the West African Youth Network, together with Caritas Freetown, Kolat en Welnes Senta-FBC, Don Bosco, and other Civil Peace Service partners, brought together community youths, elders, community leaders, and peace practitioners to celebrate the International Day of Peace (21st September 2025). The goal was to bridge the generational divides and build a safe space for participants to openly share perspectives on Justice, governance, and peacebuilding.

The safe space that was provided, allowed participants to openly share their experiences of violence within their community and how they were able to uphold peace.

A panel discussion was held, where speakers discussed the topic: โ€œHow do we collectively promote a culture of Non-violence and unity in our neighbourhoods?โ€ The conversation was a powerful reminder to us that every generation has a unique and vital role to play in changing our story.

Our guest Speaker for the Seminar was Mr Mohamed Kanneh (English), who gave an inspiring speech on this yearโ€™s International Day of Peace theme (Act Now for a Peaceful World) and also explained the role of intergenerational Collaboration.

The seminar concluded with a shared commitment session, where every participant pledged to be an active agent of peace in their community. This "Act Now for a Peaceful World" commitment is the legacy of our dialogue and a promise to translate words into concrete actions.
